Streak freeze system suggestion.

I am a big fan of Duolingo and have a suggestion. This idea comes from chess.com which is a huge webpage for playing chess. They offer games where one has 1 or more days per move and the person who doesn't move in time loses the game = similar to losing a streak here on Duolingo. Chess.com offers a feature called "vacation time", every new user gets 7 days of it and new days are added as the time passes. When the user knows they will be away from internet, they can "take vacation" .. no matter if it's one day or 7 days in a row. For that time the profile says "on vacation" and all games are paused. I find it to be much better system compared to streak freeze here. It's more fair since it's not infinite source of single streaks like here on Duolingo, but in the same time it allows people to save the vacation days for those 14 days vacation when they are in the middle of nowhere with no internet connection.

Let me know what you think.

The thing is, if you are on vacation, you are not keeping your streak.

The streak is simply meant to be a motivator. We learn languages better if we practice some every day, and the streak is meant to encourage us to do just that.

The point is that losing a streak can be very demotivating and this system would be more fair...it works pretty much like vacation time on work place. While todays streak freeze is really silly, I could freeze my streak for 189 days if I come to Duolingo to buy a streak freeze every day... what does it proof?

Streak freeze doesn't work on the day you purchase it, so in the current system, one must have done at least half the days that the streak shows.

Meanwhile, I just got back from a vacation to places that had very limited internet access, and yet I still managed to maintain my streak. Had I not, I would not have felt demotivated because my goal is to learn Spanish, and Duolingo is just one of many ways that I am doing that. If one keeps the learning objective in perspective, the gamification elements are just fun bonuses.

Why would the streak freeze not work on the day you purchase it?

I haven't tested this myself, but I have been told that this is the way it works. If you do not have a streak freeze already equipped, and you purchase one, but then don't practice that same day, your streak ends.

I have gone 3-5 days in a row several times using streak freezes with no issue. I have heard stories where the streak freeze didn't work on the day of purchase. This could be because the purchase did not properly sync. After buying a streak freeze I refresh the page or app. I will generally check to see that the purchase updated on both in app and in browser.

Fascinating. I will trust your experience while preferring not to experiment myself. You are absolutely correct that there are many opportunities for user error, forgetfulness, and syncing issues when dealing with streaks.

If you are in a vacation time, you can start another streak with renewed energies and more motivation!

I agree. Streak freeze should be seen as insurance in case something unexpected comes up. You don't buy car insurance because you plan to have an accident.

I like your suggestion, but I don't care about streaks.

I'm in the habit of breaking my streak every now and then just in order not to focus too much on that, and focus more on my languages. This keeps me happy.

I have a long streak (since I don't have problems to keep it) but if I lose it so be it... but I know that for many people streak is very important and this kind of change would be appreciated by many, since it especially sucks to lose a streak on langauge learning site because of traveling (and practicing languages while traveling) just because you didn't make it on time to the internet spot.

Take a vacation. Forgive the irony, but streaks don't matter - I certainly don't need the 151 lingots I received today, but they'll sit since I'm not going to spend my time distributing them. What you describe from the chess site is different, just postponing something that doesn't necessarily represent what a Duolingo streak does. If you've not done a Duolingo lesson for a week, you don't have a streak. That's not necessarily bad; it just means that you don't have a streak.

Streaks aren't important. Don't put so much weight on one.

I absolutely, totally agree!!!! I would love to see streak freezes accrue at, say, one freeze per month, much like vacation time. I think it's reasonable to take a break occasionally.

Right now, I have over 5700 Lingots. I could theoretically use freezes to keep my streak going for 570 days without ever touching a lesson. That's just wrong.

I have been doing Duolingo for over three years, and I have broken my streaks only while traveling to countries where I have practiced the skills learned on Duolingo.

5700 Lingots. I could theoretically use freezes to keep my streak going for 570 days without ever touching a lesson. That's just wrong.

But, as I understand it, this wouldn't work. You would have to insert one day of actual work ("touch a lesson") between two "freeze" days.

But this is something that I generally see with some concern: People are so concerned with the system! I think it would be better to spend that energy on learning, the reason why we all are here.

why not?
If you buy a streak freeze and you don't practice for that day, you lose your wager. And then the next day your buy another streak freeze and so on. (it is nonsense to do that, but it should work IMO)

Sure. But it might also have a downside: taking several days off could cause some people to never return. Overall the positive effects probably outweigh the negatives though.

Sometimes people just need a break - for whatever reason. The streak should mainly act as a motivator rather than for bragging rights. I know some people will hate your suggestion because it "devaluates streaks", but that's BS / unimportant in my opinion.
