In English we dont usually say at - do you play the cello or violin

It is pretty clear by now that the beginning and the end of this course were made by different individuals.

Or perhaps that the beginning of the course has had a lot more reports filed and acted upon?

In correct English, one can play "an instrument", NOT "at an instrument"!!!

Having "play at" as an acceptable option is one thing but it is frustrating to be marked wrong for omitting it

Actually, I have to insist here: "to play at an instrument" is not even an acceptable option in Standard English, it's just simply WRONG!!

"Do you play the violin or the cello" ar trebui să fie acceptat ca răspuns corect.

Aș zice singurul răspuns corect.

if you were playing at an instrument it would mean you were forcing the instrument to be an audience member without it wanting to be involved

Quite right!

Like we study at law? It may be correct, but it's rarely heard in conversational English.

We ought to be able to tell them exactly what is wrong...do the admins pay any attention to the stuff that is said here? Does it help at all for more people to say that it is very wrong to say someone plays "at" an instrument in English. Not only is it never said, it's wrong!

Omitting the "at" is accepted.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Scevola3

I was marked wrong for omitting it!! And it's not a question of acceptance: the "at" is simply WRONG!!
