I don't know but it's the same when they lose their wallet. I've looked it up and this seems to be the correct usage.
In the same way, you would say びっくりした！When you're surprised
こまります ー I get in trouble.
こまっていますー I am in trouble.
こまりました ー I have gotten in trouble.
Duo accepts こまっています and こまりました.
Only these two forms imply that you are currently in the state of being in trouble. The fist form just implies that you generally can get in to trouble or that you will get in to trouble in future.
