Why did 9 months come down to nothing? Did you lose your memory as well?

Though it may feel as a huge failure, please don't see it as so. Just because you lost a streak doesn't mean all of your dedication and work came to nothing. That would be a shame to let all of that go in vain. Instead, look at how miraculous that achievement is. Not everyone can get a 303 streak; nowadays, I can't get a streak over 20. It's proof of how much you desire to spend your time here on Duolingo and you should be proud of yourself. ^ ^

Plus, you did learn, right? The knowledge you've obtained is valuable and certainly didn't come to nothing.

this is an opportunity-I've had a few of these myself-it pays to be positive. you now come to duolingo because you want to, not because you have to maintain the streak. sometimes the game elements suck you in (sometimes?) and feeding the call of the streak really feels like maintaining an addiction. but now, for the next however long until that flame reappears by your name, you're free! rejoice! breathe in deeply the clean air of not having a streak to work on!!!!!! on the other hand..........totally sucks what happened-you fell off the horse, get back on, you'll be sore-especially when they offer to restore you streak for $$$, and when you get one measly lingot for 10 days work. but the lessons are still there, waiting to be tackled, whenever you are ready. best of luck.

I recommend reading this thread: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/23563792

My thoughts: The streaks are meant to be a motivator. A streak is not a purpose in itself. Our purpose here is learning languages, making progress in learning. And this is not harmed by starting a new streak.

The thread I recommend, in particular its first post, is really heart-warming.

I feel the streaks are over-rated.....now that I've lost a huge one. No worries, concentrate on your original goal. :)

Aw, what matters is that you use Duolingo to improve your languages, not for the streak :) Your lost streak was a big one, but it's the language learning that counts over a streak on a website. Here, have a lingot :)

303 is still amazing, and you didn't lost your memory of what you learn now did you ?

I remember my first streak was around 100 days before I lost it. It's no big deal, just keep at it and you'll get back up there again.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments- and yes that streak count was a motivator because I was inclined to get to 365 days. But, I did learn from that slip up and the course itself.
