Users beware: please don't give out personal info!

Dear Duolingo members,

Please, please be careful about giving out personal info on the internet, particularly your age, birthday, grade in school, and location, since those things can easily be used to steal your identity or potentially even cause you harm. We had a bad case here on Duolingo just recently where someone stole another learner's identity, then created a similar profile with the same information, and used that profile to violate Duolingo community standards. The ID thief was kicked out as a Duolingo user, but he or she still has all of the information from the victim, and can potentially use it to cause harm to the victim elsewhere. Wanting our members (and particularly younger members who may not be familiar with the dangers) to be safe, please do not post your full name, your address or location, your birthday, your grade in school, or other information (such as telephone number, e-mail address, skype info, et cetera) that can be used to cause you harm or allow someone to steal your identity. Identity thieves can do major damage to your finances and credit rating, too. If you have some of the information noted above posted somewhere now, either in your profile, in a thread here on Duolingo, or in a public setting on a social networking site, please consider editing or deleting the identifying info to protect yourself!

Good article, but it is specifically about the UK, so it may not apply to those in other countries. Either way, be careful what you post!

Kristine, thank you for adding this and for all of the work you and the Duolingo team do to make this a great place for learners. It was great to see how quickly the team took care of the situation yesterday.

The problem is, once you connect to Facebook here, you can never disconnect...

SOLUTION TO THE FB DISCONNECT PROBLEM!

Selcen_Ozturk and I worked together on this since we were having the same issue. We would go to the pulldown menu on our username at the upper right, then hit SETTINGS, then to PROFILE, and then hit the disconnect from FB button, but on our browsers, it never allowed the "SAVE CHANGES" button to be activated on the screen. When I did this, it would appear that I successfully escaped from FB (the blue FB icon disappeared from my profile page), but as soon as I did a browser REFRESH or exited and returned to Duolingo, it showed that FB was reconnected again. Therefore, we found a workaround: Go to SETTINGS and then PROFILE as before, and then hit "DISCONNECT FROM FACEBOOK." If your browser activates the "SAVE CHANGES" button near the top of your screen, hit that and you're done; however, if like us, the "SAVE CHANGES" button does not activate, you'll need to add or change something in one of the three boxes above (e.g., Fullname, Location, or Bio), which will then activate the "SAVE CHANGES" button. Hit that to save both your disconnect from FB and the change in the selected item. Then, if you wish, you can go back into the selected box, and change your wording back if needed.

Selcen_Ozturk reported that she needed to first edit the statement then hit the disconnect from FB, since on her browser, if she edited first, when she hit disconnect, the edit was gone, and it wouldn't allow her to save her changes. I was using a version of Firefox and found that I was able to do it either way, so if you're having this problem, you may need to experiment to see which way works best for you.

Many thanks to Selcen_Ozturk for her help with this!

When you disconnect, you have to click "save changes" at the top-right.

https://www.duolingo.com/AbraxunsIllusion

Yes you can. Under "Profile Settings".

seriously? I and many others have the same problem. The moment I am connected to Duolingo and Facebook using the same browser, Duolingo connects to Facebook again. It is also discussed here: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/2242127

Edit: Looking at your profile, I see no FB account linked to your account, but I'll leave my original message in case it is helpful to others.

@Selcen_Ozturk - I was experiencing the same problem, but I was finally able to disconnect. Try this since it worked for me. Disconnect your FB account in user preferences, and then immediately make a minor edit to your name, location or bio to activate the "save changes" button, and click the "save changes" button. You should now be disconnected from Facebook.

pinkodoug, your suggestion is exactly what Selcen and I had discovered earlier yesterday afternoon as we were experimenting, making us both able to disconnect. Disconnecting wasn't saved without changing and saving something else, too. Thank you for your help.

Yeah, I took a look at that, I'm not sure what it could be.

This could be a dumb questions. Have you tried deleting cookies, either all, or just for Duolingo and FB?

p.s. I am not connected via Facebook, and for a long time I have not even visited my wall :D

jitengore, I tried it the other day and it didn't work. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Selcen, if you try and get it to work, please let us know, including what browser you're using. Thanks!

@jitengore: just now I even tried this: log out of facebook, disconnect facebook on duolingo, log out of duolingo. Clean all cookies etc. Log in to duolingo (when I am not even connected to Facebook). Result: I am again connected to Facebook... I give up :)

Log out of Duolingo and log back in. If your system is like mine, you'll be reconnected again upon login.

https://www.duolingo.com/AbraxunsIllusion

I'm aware. I've had it on here before, the point of this little talk is, I was able to take it off, and you two weren't for some reason.

https://www.duolingo.com/AbraxunsIllusion

I've been disconnected for ages, you know. Every time I log back on, I do not get reconnected, I assure you. I was connected, but my parents wanted me to disconnect for good reason. I did so, and never had this problem that you and Selcen are having.

https://www.duolingo.com/AbraxunsIllusion

Yeah, you should report it via support tab. I know you believe me, I'm just putting emphasis on not :P.

https://www.duolingo.com/VStarTraveler

2bimic, ditto to what Selcen_Ozturk said; I'm glad it worked for you. I just logged out after disconnecting from FB again, then logged back in, and, abracadabra, I'm connected to FB again. I've done the same on Firefox and IE. It is frustrating.

https://www.duolingo.com/AbraxunsIllusion

I don't know what's so different about my account, but there's obviously some kind of problem between FB and Duolingo.

https://www.duolingo.com/VStarTraveler

2bimic, one more thing about that, I have been able to disconnect the FB sharing (i.e., putting out a notification every time you do anything on Duolingo), but it's the Facebook profile link that Selcen and I are discussing. It's the little blue Facebook icon that is on your home page just below your avatar and username. If that little blue link is there, it allows anyone logged into FB to go to your FB profile and see anything you have made "Public".

https://www.duolingo.com/VStarTraveler

Thanks, 2bimic. I'm going to send a report to support since the discussion last week didn't come up with any user solutions.

https://www.duolingo.com/tariqnisarahmed

Have you all tried disconnecting from within FB? Go to FB, go to your settings there, look at what apps have permission to access FB, and then dis-allow FB. That should reject any attempt to reconnect automatically. Good luck!

for me, duolingo is not listed under "Apps you use", therefore I cannot do that

https://www.duolingo.com/VStarTraveler

Same for me.

https://www.duolingo.com/tariqnisarahmed

Well, maybe we're not talking about the same "apps." Worth checking if it helps you out, right? So bear with me: I start in the desktop view of FB. At the top righthand corner of the page is a pull-down menu, and I choose "Settings" from there. In the left margin will be links, and I click on "Apps." That gives me a list of mobile apps and web sites with access to FB. Duolingo is listed there. Hope that helps! If not you should try posting a thread in the Troubleshooting discussion forum.

https://www.duolingo.com/VStarTraveler

I posted the issue to troubleshooting last week. It wasn't an app issue for Selcen and me. We now have a solution. I'll post it when I can get to a real computer.

https://www.duolingo.com/AbraxunsIllusion

Well said. First names, if you put your name on there at all, should be sufficient. Don't put last names and specific locations.

https://www.duolingo.com/tariqnisarahmed

Should be reminder given to each member whenever they use the option to edit their profiles. That's when they most need the reminder, and sadly this thread will fade quickly because discussions cannot be "pinned" to stay at the top of a list.

Maybe this caution should go in the wiki, but again it needs to be there when it is most needed -- whenever a profile is edited.

https://www.duolingo.com/VStarTraveler

The last part of the Community Guidelines touches on this, but I don't think it goes quite far enough:

"Think before you share

We care about your safety. Speaking another language is inherently social, but please don’t swap or post any private information that could be misused. Don’t share your skype name, email, phone number, address or what time you’ll be at home with anyone. Simply put: don’t overshare."

I've added a few more of these items to the original note to cover a few more bases.

Perhaps it would be better if those who are minors didn't put photos of themselves on their profiles. I've never understood why anyone wants to do that anyway, but if you are drawing attention to the fact that you're 12 or whatever (and some of them look younger than that) it is a bit of a flag to young bullies that you might be easy to intimidate.
