600 day Streak. :)
I got my 600 day streak July 25 2017 :). What I have accomplished to date?
Well, I have gotten to level 25, got tired of redoing lessons just to keep the tree golden, so I reset my German. Since then, I have completed my tree again and gotten back up to level 21. My goal is to get to level 25 again before I reset the tree to start again (if I feel like continuing with Duo that is).
I wish I would have recorded my first XP count, but I didn't. My current XP count is 22016. I know I had to have had at least 30,000 making my total XP over 50,000 to date. Yay me (lol I only want this as a record for future reference, so not really bragging here)
I also have been learning German using Youtube. I watch daily vloggers who record their everyday lives. I have found that to be a great way to learn new words, communicate through the comment section with native speakers, as well as learning listening skills. I also translate German videos into English helping Youtube translations for CC.
Also, I have created flashcards for Tinycards in German. I have 157 topics consisting of 6749 cards. That along with my Duo word count of 2558 makes my total words learned 9307. Here is my link to Tinycards if you are interested in following the decks I have made.
I used the internet, English/German dictionary, Youtube and Duolingo to create them. Many of the words are not on Duolingo.
LOL that's funny. I didn't realize it was Steak. I will change it... Right after I wipe the laughter tears from my very red face :). Thank you for letting me know.
Yes, I can understand that. Great job and you showed an amazing endurance. I just wanted to act according to your nickname ;-)
Great job getting your 600 day streak! That's awesome you reset your tree (by the way, congrats on your previous level 25), as I was thinking about doing that myself. Anyways, continue the great work SpeakGerman2me!
Thank you so much for your kind reply.
I can understand why you would consider resetting. I like resetting because it forces you to re-do everything. I didn't know how may words I did not learn the first time around until I reset. I know duo has an algorithm for that reason, but I found it helpful to just begin again.
That being said, the first, and easiest section, was quite dull. I could have skipped past half of the tree because I knew it verbatim. But once I got past that section, I found that the rest of the tree was just as exciting as the first time around. I lost all of my progress however, and in doing so, it looks like I don't know as much as I do. But, I don't mind. All that I care about is learning.
Hi Speak... You have done a lot! You are a hard worker! Well, today I have got my 800 streak. That would deserve a new forum like in your case, but honestly, I feel quite incomplete and I can't understand how many words I have learned. From the English-German course 2440, from French-German 1200. So 3640 all together for German. But first I learned English, French and (advanced) Italian. I study two hours each day and four on days I don't work. For that reason I am able to communicate by writing in 5 languages, accepting some difficulty for German which I started only 14 months ago. But wait, ... the route is so long and unpredictable of course!! You have been doing great, that's the only thing I can say. Surely living, working and studying in a whole other way than I have been doing all of my 800 days. So great, keep it up and.. your profile name is.. "speak German to me" hope we are doing so soon?! Noch viel Erfolg und Spaß!!
Danke. Du hast auch einen tollen Job gemacht. Herzlich glückwunsch für Ihre 800 Tage!!!
Liebe(r) Speak.. Also kein Problem.
Gute gemacht!!! Do you know what is your level (A2, B1 etc), you can take a test in DW. I also recommend the telenovela (Jojo) with the grammar exercises.
You can get a temporary email address (google it) or invent one, you only need a real one if you want to take a course and keep record of your progress, not for the test or if you just one to take the course and you will remember the next lesson (for most courses). But it is a safe site.
I tried the placement test, but it keeps showing a blank page after answering the first question. Not sure why.
Great work! I'm almost at an 800 day streak and have yet to finish the German tree. I only start a new lesson when I have had the tree fully golden for about a week. I'm hoping that by repetition it will sink in better but I still feel like I don't know it well enough. I must be doing ok though as I don't often miss words these days. I listen to Antenae Bayern app instead of normal radio and am now surprised at how much I can understand. Speaking is still an issue as I have no real way of practicing.
Your dedication is amazing. You are doing fantastic. Don't let yourself think anything else. If it takes a long time, that's okay. The real goal here is to enjoy the experience of learning another language.
The way I keep myself going is remembering that it took me about 2-3 years to learn my native English well enough to communicate with my parents what I wanted. Another 12 years to be able to communicate with the rest of the world well, and yet another ?some odd years? to understand politics and medical terms and other such words that are beyond the day to day communications. And still, there are many many words and terms that I have no idea about (and I am talking about my native language here). Not to mention that I am not understood when I think I am clear as mud (also talking about my native language). So what I am getting at here, is that I will never feel like I know German 100% because I can't even feel that way about English.
My goal is to understand another person with the day to day life stuff, and to be able to communicate the same. I will get there, and so will you. It's a work in progress, and I am honored to be on this journey with you :). Just remember, you are the captain of your own ship, ⛴ Bon voyage my friend. And congratulations on 800 (in advance).
Those are the best words of wisdom that I have read in this forum. Thank you for that inspiration.
SpeakGerman2me, was ist dein Muttersprache? Also! Was für ne Landsmann bischt!
