Hi,

I'm trying to translate the lyrics for Vi sålde våra hemman, and got stuck on this verse. I have no idea what most of it means. Help would be much appreciated!

O Herre Gud bevara var mänska på vår jord från att sig ge i fara och tro kol'ptörers ord. Min sång är kylningspulver för dem att taga in som ämna emigrera och ha ett flyktigt sinn.

It's awesome that you're reading old texts like this! This song has such a beautiful melody, I hope you'll inspire others to listen to it. The text is so sad though.

kolportörer were people who traveled around and sold various publications. There's a word colporter in English with the same meaning. Those days, there were a lot of pamphlets in circulation that were written to make people want to emigrate to e.g. the US, painting it out to be like paradise on Earth more or less.

att ge sig i fara literally means 'give oneself into danger'

kylningspulver is a 'cooling powder' – it was more common for medicines to be in powder form back then.

taga in means 'ingest' here

So the text says approximately, "O Lord, keep each man on our earth from putting himself in danger's way by believing the word(s) of colporters. My song is a cooling powder for those to ingest who intend to emigrate and who have a flighty mind."

Thank you so much! Yes, I'm planning on singing it in church this week. My friend is preaching, and a large part of her sermon will be sharing the grief of emigrating, or rather realizing that many of us (descendants of emigrants) no longer have any connection to our ancestral homes.
