We now have Block feature
I just noticed we can block users.
On the top right corner of someone's profile page, there's a little widget that, when clicked on, says block [Username].
Interesting, given the design of the feature. I believe it will expand in the future and have more options. They are probably slowly deploying tools that will complement the Teams feature.
Is it possible this is a test run? It's not appearing on peoples profiles for me.
The gear icon should be a very light gray until you click on it, that is when it turns blue. It could be your contrast settings, maybe? Also, the image I posted is a bit distorted. The gear is further away from the user profile icon. I just moved things closer together so the pic would take up less room when I posted it.
Ah, Thank you. Didn't spot that at all! It might be worth changing the colour so it's a bit more visible! (Can't reply directly to your post) Many thanks though :)
Can we get some people to upvote Xephers' comment so it will move to the top of the discussion? We still have several people asking about it because this comment is a little buried. Thanks!
I have been really shocked at how incredibly aggressive people can get. Somebody just ranted at me that he speaks better French than I do, because he insists all French nouns ending in 'e' are masculine. He's told me I make 'fool mistakes', and that I obviously haven't lived in France long enough. (I worked there for three years - I am doing my French course to improve my spelling, which I admit can be poor.) Oh - he's also told me that 'le soupe' is more commonly used now than 'le potage.' Because he read it in a book. (I worked in the Pyrinees, and knew a chef who always said 'potage,' and didn't like the word 'soupe' because it was an imported English word - anyway. GAH.
How do I block this troll? (He's about seventeen, so I shouldn't let it get to me.)
I know this an older post but with this kind of behavior, his age or your age doesn't matter. This kind of thing drains your energy, time and ability to feel comfortable here, and that is unfair to you. That's what matter. And saying it shouldn't get to you shifts the blame to you and it'd not your fault at all. Everyone, regardless of their age, needs to learn how to behave respectfully towards others as part of being a member of society, and it's not OK to expect the rest of us to put up with disrespect behavior.
Thanks DL staff.... Lately many annoying people have been here. I am so happy to read something like this! :)
I'm curious to find out how to unblock people, in case anyone accidentally blocks someone while they are just checking the feature out.
Apparently when you block someone you can still see their spammy post. To unblock them you use the same button you used to block them. So it looks like this feature only prevents them from interacting with you by posting on your stream.
You've got a point, but it shouldn't be automatic. Perhaps a certain number of blockings should send a notification to our community manager.
That would be very much open to abuse. Do we really want gangs of kids picking on a classmate to ensure no one can see and answer their questions?
@harryclark17 Only staff controls sitewide bans of that kind. That way, it helps to control what could otherwise be used for group trolling and bullying.
At least it should be a metric the DL staff can pull up to help root out trolls.
I noticed this a little while ago, but I assumed that it had been there all along, and that I just hadn't found it yet.
The problem is that it could be abused very easily if it were that easy to find.
Maybe a report option should be added underneath the comments along with Reply and Give Lingot so that way mods are directed right to the content and be able to determine right away if its abusive. My problem is that reporting people is so difficult that I don't do it. I always forget how to.
Mods don't handle reports at all, we don't even get to see them.
Instead, mods rely on coming across comments and discussions first hand, but even more so on social networks to help us locate that material.
We have delete buttons, so we can generally remove content more quickly than staff because we have fewer duties to divide our attention and time. But, as far as removing users, we don't have that ability.
Staff needs to receive the report to determine what action should be taken beyond deleted discussions and comments. Generally what happens is that someone tells a mod about something so we can delete it. Then, mods use the white Support button on the left like any other user can to have Staff follow up.
Users are also able to email firstname.lastname@example.org if they are being harassed or bullied etc.
I cant see where this is, can you tell me please? Not that i have any problems.
I may have accidentally block a few users I was originally following; How can I know whom I blocked? ...Or who blocked me? [ I forgot the name of the users ]
It appears as though mods can be blocked? I had suggested this feature not apply to mods so that we could issue "warnings" to people about inappropriate behavior, without being blocked. Anyone care to block me so I can see if I am indeed blocked? Just reply here and let me know, then I'll try to post on your stream.
I will Hohenems
Update: You are now blocked. When I click on the icon, it says "Unblock" as an option.
Thanks. I can't post on your stream. The whole text box is gone. That just means less warnings, more reporting.
@Hohenems. Ok. Thanks for doing the experiment. You're now unblocked. I wish they hadn't made it possible for people to block mods. You're right, less warnings, more reports. But, only if they think of blocking the mods before hand. And that will only get them banned more quickly if they do that. So, maybe it all evens out in the end.
I don't see it as much of a problem, only regular users would even know who the mods are. I've been here for a while and I still don't know a lot of the mods. So unless they go out of their way to find them, I don't think it is a problem.
So when I blcok someone, they cannot only post on my stream but still see my activity?
I couldn't post on Usagi's stream. I could still see Usagi's stream though.
Sorry, I didn't check anything else out. I also noticed that immersion now shows who has worked on a document. Maybe Kristine, or another staff member will post something soon running down new features.
So how do I keep someone from seeing my activity stream? There are some users where their activity is suspicious and I don't want them watching my activity!
@Amy-schultz, it is not possible to keep someone else from seeing your Activity at this time.
I doubt it. It doesn't really seem to do anything. Normally, a block feature means you don't see someone's posts.
Hi RealDeadlox and Jo_Katie, if you scroll up you will see my post for "Instructions for how to block a user." I have a screen shot and the person above me has written instructions. Blocking another user will not prevent them from being able to read your Activity stream, but it will prevent them from commenting there. I hope this helps! ^_^
So what does the feature do, exactly? I know that if I block someone, they can't message me directly, but will they still be able to post in my threads?
Go through the same steps. The option in the grey gear should say "unblock user" after you've blocked them. Click that. :)
