Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

https://www.duolingo.com/lushberry

Duolingo needs more forum moderators!

The forums are getting spammed day in and day out, and a few moderators haven't been very active recently.

The Duolingo Staff really should make more mods to un-spam the forums and keep them tidy. These people should be:

  1. Passionate (and considerate too!!!)
  2. Active
  3. Reasonable
  4. Helping
  5. Love-learning
  6. Welcoming
  7. Detailed and positive

I really hope you'll take 'adding a few mods' idea into consideration ;)

Thx for making this site amazing!

(...And if you have someone in my mind who would be a good mod, don't be afraid to suggest someone!)

Unfortunately, without the streams it's not as easy to contact moderators about spam or inappropriate behavior occurring with users. I don't know if having more mods would help much, but perhaps it would make some difference.

I would be a terrible mod, as I am either hesitant to resolve issues or I jump to conclusions quickly. I mean, I have all of those traits you mentioned, just simply not the courage. However, people who would be amazing moderators are:

  • Multi0Lingual4

  • CharmingTiger

  • DragonPolyglot

  • Speir_

More may come to mind, but they seem, at least to me, very capable of the job besides the moderators that already exist.

I kinda don't want to point people out or make anyone feel bad, but Speir_ has all the great qualities you've mentioned.

Duolingo has said in this post that they are working on

Streamlined application process

which (among the other things mentioned in that post means that hopefully they will clean up the moderator system and also a better application system for interested moderators. (yay!)

P.S. I would love for Speir_ to be a mod. They're so helpful and active!

I would agree with you except that mods aren't hired. They are volunteers. And one of the reasons there hasn't been as much moderating going on is because spam cannot be reported as easily to them, which means more manual scrolling. This is one reason why streams going away was a huge deal. The only way to become a forum mod is being emailed by Duolingo directly.

Not quite. There's also this application form.

As others have said, it's currently a bit frustrating because there's no way to report problems to moderators with the Activity Stream gone. However:

  1. Ignore and down vote the spam. It disappears after five down votes.
  2. If someone is producing huge quantities of hateful, pornographic, or otherwise vile spam, you can email abuse@duolingo.com But save this for egregious offenses, please! That email address gets tons of email and is difficult for them to manage already.
  3. You don't have to be a moderator to be helpful in the forums. That's one thing that makes Duolingo so amazing: the great community of users that it has :)
  4. If you want to apply to be a moderator, or to nominate someone else to be a moderator, there is a link to an application form in the "Help" article about moderators (https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/articles/204980530-Who-are-the-forum-moderators-)

Staff are currently revamping the moderator program, so things will improve. Right now we just have to sit tight while the communication tools and moderating program are experiencing growing pains.

You're right, there are many spammers, specially on the Duolingo (Spanish) forum, there are no mods there, and it's a chaos. Also, many people there have doubts about English, and nobody helps them. I would like to be a mod. to help them with their problems, and to make them know about the rules of Duolingo

As others have mentioned, the moderators are unpaid volunteers and therefore not hired. In any case, I've found that the best way to deal with spam is to a) downvote it and b) report it to abuse@duolingo.com if someone egregiously violates the guidelines and obviously isn't interested in learning languages.

It doesn't matter how many mods there are because all they can do is delete spam once it has already happened, they can't stop people from spamming only clean up afterwards.

Edit : a lot of the spam is downvoted out of sight by the community

Too many mods is a bad thing though. Harder to keep everyone on the same page for Guideline interpretation, stepping on each other's toes, more chances for information leaks, mods feeling more anonymous to one another which can cause a break down in personal accountability which can directly affect the forums. It is a delicate balance between just enough moderators and two many. I would personally prefer to have slightly not enough mods than too many.

Okk, based on the feedback and suggestions people have made, overall, people seem to want Speir_ to be a moderator. I kinda agree with this choice actually. This user has made good contributions to the community and is always there to answer questions. He's friendly and reasonable, so maybe it would be good if this user was a mod. I would like Reena and Patrick.Phang to be mods. patrick.Phang is soooo helpful, and sets a great example to the community!! I think he'd be great as a moderator.

It was very strange to log on after awhile and see how many people commented on this post.

I would love to be a mod. I try to help out people when I see them with questions/concerns in the discussions tab. I love this site, and I love learning German on here.

Yes I agree, there is definitely too much spam. If I had to choose someone I would vote Marc, he is always answering questions about French and explaining things, but I don't know how active he is outside of the French forum. He should certainly be a moderator of that sub-forum though, at least!
