I have successfully passed the 'past tense' checkpoint in my Spanish tree, but I kind of regret it. Is there a way to deactivate that skill and return to strengthening all the other skills first?

There's no need to deactivate anything - you can go back and strengthen any skill you like, any time you like, just by tapping (or clicking) on the particular skill you want to strengthen.

Duolingo makes you go forwards in a particular order because it wants you to learn all the skills and not skip the ones you find difficult or dull - but it's quite happy for you to go back and revise!

Thanks for your response Jen. I guess you are right and I will just accept the fact that I can not master the basics perfectly before going to the harder parts. Thank you.
