Am I missing something?

As I move up through levels, I notice that previous lessons have fewer gold squares, even ones that I previously "mastered". Is this simply to get me to go back to review them? I don't want to move on until I have mastered that vocabulary or category, but it's frustrating that previous lessons can't be integrated into more advanced ones. Is there a way to lock these somehow?

Have a look at this topic about the new skill tree that was posted by Duolingo's founder Luis:

I fully agree with you. I came here to the thread board because I feel the same way and found your enquiry. I have been practising German for over a week now, and I make sure to "master" all my levels, by going through all lessons and making sure I finish them with no mistakes (or just one, at most). But the next day, my "perfection" bar halves, and somehow goes from perfect to medium with no apparent reason. Not only is this frustrating, it's also confusing, because I feel I'm either missing something, or doing something wrong.
