Why are the microphone questions not corrected properly?

In a question requiring microphone I said something in English that was far from what I should have said. Yet the answer was checked as good. It is something wrong with the speech recognition mechanism or with my microphone/settings?

I believe (though I can't show a reference) that the voice recognition gets stricter as you progress. In early lessons it's very forgiving, but later on will require a better accent.

I don't think that's true, at least not in Spanish. I have finished my tree and the voice recognition didn't get stricter as I progressed.

I also got the impression that the voice recognition is far from perfect and I didn't notice any change depending on the level. I'd like to have some comments from the duolingo team on this!

I purposefully pronounced some words wrong and it still said they were correct!
