Entschuldigung - appropriate usage

So, would one use "Entschuldigung" as a substitute for "pardon me." or "sorry," if you accidentally bump into someone in the crowd? Or is it only used to be polite when you are interrupting someone in order to ask something?

I would use it in either case. I think it's always appropriate when you think that you are causing / have caused some sort of discomfort to someone or when you are trying to get someone's attention, for example, if you want to pass by someone to get out of a crowded tram:

"Entschuldigung -- k├Ânnten Sie mich bitte durchlassen?"

You can use " es tut mir leid".

I would use "es tut mir leid" only after the fact, and only if I had done something really bad. "Entschuldigung", on the other hand, can be used more flexibly, and in any case of (potential) inconvenience.

Yes, "pardon me" and "sorry" would be a correct usage.

That's such a long word. Germans really mean it when they say I'm sorry.
