Lost my 1300 day Streak. OMG!
This morning I woke up and saw my 1300 day streak had reset to 0. I usually berate those who bemoan this when it happens but to me my initial reaction was OMG and my stomach felt like emptying itself. However, after that initial reaction I felt elation for being lifted out of the drugery of having to practice every day. This only lasted for a short time because when I went in to my iPad to do a practise, I was met with an offer to restore my streak and almost without thinking I had paid the ransom and got back on the treadmill.
What an emotional rollercoaster. I will certainly be more sympathetic (and careful) in the future.
That must've been a shock to wake up to, Pete.
Welcome back my friend to the show that never ends.
For the record, here's what happened from the Duolingo servers' point of view:

I just lost my 275-day streak today! So I feel for you, although 1000 is a much bigger deal. It's the better part of 3 years.
What's this about streak repair? I didn't get a message about that. Is it something you can request? And if so, how?
Streak Repair is only an option in the Android and iOS apps (tablets and phones). If you install the latest app on one of those devices and sign in to your account, you will likely get a popup offering the Streak Repair for a fee which will be charged to your credit card registered with Google Play or Apple App store. It is optional.
Your extended profile shows Streak Repair is available to you. It will go away after a few days.
Your practice times are shown below in GMT since I didn't see any location information in your profile. You need to make sure your practice registers with the Duolingo servers each day, if you want to ensure your streak continues.

Thanks, just did it. It wasn't $5 as someone said, but $13.99. My first thought was "you've gotta be kidding, forget it." But then I thought about the fact that I've been using Duo for a year and haven't paid a cent, so I bought it. Despite its flaws, I like this site a lot and I use it every day. (Well, heh... almost every day. :) )
You're welcome. Make sure you have a Streak Freeze (10 lingots in the store) and check your streak flame updates each day on your Duolingo home page and you won't have to pay for a Streak Repair again :)
Good logic for supporting the site. I applaud you. For some that's too much money.
When you get to 300 days, consider signing up for the Streak Hall of Fame. I publish it every Sunday in a new post.
There's a link to the sign up page in my profile (for when you reach 300).
Yes, I usually do check to make sure I'm covered with the freeze, but this time I went two days in a row without practicing. I didn't realize that much time had gone by. I'm glad to get the streak back. I don't feel trapped by it, in fact I find it motivating. Even on the days when I only do the minimum to meet my daily goal, I've done a bit of practicing and have strengthened a skill that needs work. I am using other tools as well as Duo, but I really like the discussion forum here, which is one of the most valuable aspects of this site.
I felt the same with my 400+ day streak. I can't imagine how it felt to lose a streak > 1000 days.
It's sobering to have to walk a mile in a streak-loser's shoes, isn't it?
I'm glad you got the opportunity to pay the ransom (and that it worked)!
I was going to bed on the right side of midnight in the right timezone the other day when I realized I did not get my 1XP yet. I wasn't sure about being streak frozen, but I was tired. So I left the fate of the 1200+ to chance. She decided to free me.
A very long streak is a hard-won badge of dedication, and something to be proud of -- but there is much much more to life than a number by a flame on a website. Sometimes a passion turns into an unhealthy compulsion and prevents a person from growing and reaching their full potential.
A good reminder for me to go ahead and practice straight away...
(I'm also curious as to how much it cost, since rumour has it that the price depends on the length of the streak.)
I was on my way to 4 or five years when I lost my streak and I am here to tell you that there is life after losing a streak. It was very freeing, but I do miss it sometimes, especially receiving all those great Lingots ;). Having a long streak gives a bit of gravitas to one's presence on Duolingo. Glad you were able to get yours back Pete.
I also lost a 1400 day streak. But you know. You gotta keep going!
And besides, I'm enjoying my time learning Norwegian and Japanese.
It was been close to me
over those last few weeks
being on holiday
so busy and not always
access to computers
I would be interested to here from Psionpete too, how much his cost was.
I am located in the EU/Germany and the repair streak option on the Android app store cost was 10,99€, not dollars (incl. VAT)....far away from only 3,99-4,99€ or better dollar which I read about on forum thread from some users.
Either costs vary per streak length, depending on country location, differences on IOS vs Android and maybe even different per user with A/B groups (I know there was some "money amount testing" going on by DuoLingo; not sure if that has finished and they finally have fixed the price for everyone)....
And 10,99€ was the price for <300 days global streak, not 1300 days!!
Ouch! I was crying a couple of weeks ago about losing my 192 day streak due to a glitch. I can't even imagine how you felt when you lost yours. I haven't been offered the streak repair though - at least not this go 'round. I lost (I think) a 30 or so day streak last year and was offered the chance to buy it back. I think it cost five dollars US. Glad you were able to buy yours back.
I haven't lost a streak yet, but I can understand that it can be a very staggering experience.
It's great that you were able to restore your streak (with a streak repair, of course).
I lost my streak too (think I was at 235 days or so) when I was traveling in Mexico and Costa Rica. I still think it was an error because I obsessively got my 10 points done every day (I was in the same time zone, I had streak protection and each day I opened a "treasure chest" proving I had done the lesson). Nevertheless, one day I saw 0 as my streak. I would have paid the ransom but I didn't want to send my credit card info over the unprotected networks I was using. The real question is why is feels so important???? I know that I have been a daily user for a long time (this is the second time I lost a lengthy streak). I have learned a lot of Spanish and it has been helpful when I have been traveling...having 9 as my streak now doesn't diminish the practicing I have been doing for a few years and yet....it annoys me. So the streak record is a weird motivator that I don't really understand but I would love to have a place on site for streak history. That would be a motivator too.
oh no! 1300 is very much- i Always get up to five or six and then it's zero again.
Dude i felt like killing myself when i lost my 50 days streak xD i dont even want to imagine how it would feel like losing a 1300 days streak....i didn't know you could pay to restore it...how much did you pay?
The good news is that this does not only work on IOS (with the notification popup on login) but also within the DuoLingo Android app store (no popup message).
You just have to know for Android that you CAN go to the store and that the relevant buy item appears.
If you wait for a popup message - like you seem to get on IOS - you are lost.
If someone has no Smartphone with Android this is no problem, as there as Android emulators like Bluestacks, where you can install the DuoLingo Android app.
It really works!
Congratulations for restoring your global Duo streak!
You just have to know that your individual course streak is nevertheless reset to 0! :-)
I have given up already on Memrise to try to run daily course streaks or extend my old streak 95 days badget...
I am glad to learn from this discussion that the lost streaks (well, not steaks) can be recovered!
So how many languages have you learned in those 3,5 years? Just checking if are you here for the streaks or are you here to learn ;-)
I have been here for almost 5 years and have only done the French and Reverse French Tree. I don't know that a count of how many trees you have completed (or languages that you've learned) is an accurate way to measure one's motivation.
it is already clear to me that I will not have learned MANY (new) languages on Duo in ~3,5 years.
Especially if you combine it with other sources like Memrise, Mondly, 50languages, books etc.
I can be lucky if this may work out for Portuguese as of my 1st Romance language.....maybe little bit of French [and Spanish] for reading/understanding in addition after a while....
Is it really important to you that a user lists 30-60 languages on the DuoLingo forum and in his/her profile when he is here on Duo 2-3++ years since registration? ;)
