Why is the pronoun 'der' in this sentence?

The child is learning to write with his left hand - Das Kind lernt mit der linken Hand zu schrieben

I was given this answer earlier by a tutorial, but don't get it. Kind is neuter, so does the 'his' make the pronoun masculine? And if it does, should the 'mit' not make it dative, hence dem? Please help!

The German word "Hand" is feminine, so the article ("the" in "the left hand") must be "der" (feminine, dative).

Those feminine datives are getting people left and right.
