I'm not really sure what this is trying to say in English...
Perhaps asking how many locals are in it? It could many restaurants, bars, markets and such.
The question in English is wrong. It's a literal translation from French. My Spanish pupils do the same. A translation should always be natural, never forced and "not sounding right"
