I'll go for game of thrones HBO series. They speak clear British accent which is fairly easy to understand. Above all it is one of the great series ever if you are fan of fantasy chronicles

I disagree. For beginners in English GoT would be too difficut to follow.

what are you disagree for?? i just state my opinion because he asked me to. maybe you’re a Star Wars fan, or a Harry Potter buff, or you love Jack Sparrow's free spirit in Pirates of the Caribbean. whatever works for you, building up your english is going to be easier with something you already know well. but i agree with you about the beginners thing, it might be best if you start with music videos since they are only few minutes long what i am saying is that if you are going to watch a video over and over then choose the one that interest you most, in my case GOT is it.. Oh and i've tried FRIEND of course, it's just too phony for me :)

"The freedom to make my own mistakes, was all I ever wanted" some frase i picked up from GOT, and become one of my favorite quotes since.

As I said before, the English used in GoT might be too difficult. I am not saying that GoT is a bad series, it is just it might not be too easy for beginners to follow, with or without subtitles. Secondly, the context in GoT is not the context that you get from daily life. How often do you have ice zombies coming, or dragons. Well, your English in wizardry or necromancy might improve, but there isn't much opportunity to use that kind of sentence.

If you associate "watching movies" with "learning English" I would say all movies are difficult even for intermediate level learner. To try to follow and make sense of an entire Engish language movie is asking a lot. It certainly helpfull in a fun way, but not sufficient. you need books and do exercises instead. Yet you could still watching movies to improve your listening skill. Thats why I choose the movie i've already watch and know the story well so i could replay them without subtitle. The most important thing is most conversation in the script using literal english and clear pronounciation without so much word stress or idiom and such to get you confused.

So no subtitle because you are suppose to watch and listen not reading. Difficult yes, thats why you need to do that repeatedly. why i stressed on pronounciation and listening because without mastering those two you will not go any further in your learning. Do you see why you could not find idioms in any duolingo exercise? Because beginner are not suppose to learn them yet. It is true that i could never use a sentence like "I am going to kill your ladywife because i need to feed my hungry dragon" in daily conversation, but i bet you never use "my girlfriend is gonna kill me because i cheated on her" youself lol. You see? different context but still similar word order applied in each sentence. And i don't mind if said that GOT is a bad series, they break all the time TV network viewers record, so it speak itself. Finally, it's quite difficult to choose because it is a matter of feeling or taste, but i will say watch what you like most, and stay away from some modern american movies unless you want to learn how to use the word "f..k" one thousand ways :-).

I would recommend sitcoms, with good Indonesian subtitles of course. American sitcoms preferably, but not with the African-American, since they use too many slangs and lingos. The English sitcoms are good, it is just sometimes their humor is too dark or too "advance". In sitcoms they speak in normal speed, use many idioms, and you can learn a proper usage of certain phrase or sentence in a specific situation. I can say that I owe "Friends" series for my English learning.

And not just focus stories, everything about culture, emotion, and some interaction.
