Hallo almal! Welcome to my new Afrikaans lessons. As of right now, we currently do not have a course on Duolingo. I am here to help anyone who is learning Afrikaans or would like to with this introductory course. Obviously, these lessons should not be used primarily as your language tool. Please consider using other resources (despite being quite limited) such as mobile apps or online websites. In each lesson, I will present the main grammar topics with examples and explanations. I have videos and actual reading material to share with you as well. I will include a Quizlet for the lesson's vocabulary and make a homework practice for you. I will post a new lesson once each week. If you have any further questions, please comment and we can discuss! Laat ons begin!

Les 1.1: Uitspraak

In this lesson, focused on uitspraak (pronunciation), I will refer you to some helpful videos which vocally explain the correct pronunciation.

Les 1.2: Teenwoordige Tyd

In this lesson, we will explore the present tense. In Afrikaans, the basic form of the verb is the infinitive, which can be expressed as a single word or with om te in front of it (this will come in a later lesson). Some examples are praat (to speak), sien (to see), and gaan (to go). To form the present tense, simply use the infinitive form for regular verbs.

Model: verb: praat --> Ek praat (I speak)

-Note: there is no distinction between the present tense and the present progressive. This means Jy lees means You read and You are reading

In Afrikaans, the subject pronouns are as follows:

Ek - I

Jy - You (s., inf.)

U - You (s./pl., very form.)

Hy/Sy/Dit - He/She/It

Ons - We

Julle - You (pl.)

Hulle - They

There are some irregular verbs in the present as well:

wees (to be): is

(to have): het

liefhê (to love): het lief

aanhê (to wear): het aan

Les 1.3a: Inleiding tot STOMPI

In Afrikaans, our word order is governed by STOMPI. Check out this quick video to briefly get to understand it. We will delve into STOMPI in a later lesson. Here is the link.

Les 1.3b: Verlede Tyd 1

We form the past tense using het and ge + main verb. Here are some examples of regular verbs:

Sy het die hond geloop. = She walked the dog.

Ons het die man gesien. = We saw the man.

The past tense in Afrikaans is also equivalent to the present perfect, pluperfect, and preterite. This means Julle het geloop means You walked/have walked/had walked.

Some verbs do not require the use of het:

wees (to be): was

kan (to be able to): kon

moet (to have to): moes

wil (to want): wou

Some verbs also have irregular past participles which use het, such as (gehad) and eet (geëet).

In the next lesson, we will further explore the past tense and STOMPI in Verlede Tyd 2.

Afrikaans Word of the Week

Die woord is mooi!

-Meaning: (adj.) beautiful, pretty, lovely -IPA: /moːi̯/
