I've finished my French tree :)

Last week, I finished my Spanish and my German tree. Now, I've finished my French tree. Hurray!

So, how good is your French now that you've completed the French tree? How would you rate yourself as a speaker/listener/reader?

March 31, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/buunny

I would say I still have a long way to go. I have to practice some more on Duolingo and read and chat with more people. I think completing a tree on Duolingo is like a stepping stone to really learning a language more in depth.

did you know any of these languages before duolingo or are you a genius?

March 30, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/buunny

Lol. No, I'm not a genius at all. I knew Spanish, French, and German of the languages offered here. I've probably spent hundreds of hours studying them, though.

March 30, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/perloff

I had the same question with SuperSpaceMusic. I started studying Spanish from 0 level and it takes me a lot of time to practice, so I am on the 17th with a tree completed on 30%. Finishing the course with 13th without a great basis seems absolutely impossible for me now. But anyway — good result! Congratulations!

Hey trying not to sound dumb here, but I just joined the program and I have no clue what a "French Tree" is. Can someone please explain???

March 31, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/buunny

It's just nickname for language courses. It's because the way the lessons were arranged they looked like branches or roots.

March 31, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/BastouXII

Actually, it comes from the gamification present here in Duolingo. Many games have a form of skill tree or technology tree, etc. It's the progress where many points need previous ones to be completed before moving forward. The name tree comes from the way many data are stored in computer science. The one most people using a computer have come to be acquainted with is the folders and files in any modern OS (from windows to Mac, including Linux, Unix, BeOS and so many others).

March 30, 2014

I'm not sure if I can translate it to english properly: HECHO PARA LA GUERRA = MADE UP FOR WAR ( like a gladiator or a soldier )

March 30, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/schergjd

I think in English we would just say "ready for war". At least if your phrase literally means well trained/equipped for combat and figuratively means ready for a fight/ready for anything.

March 30, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/buunny

Oh! That makes sense now. Lol. It's kind of funny. I don't know if I'm ready for anything, but I am ready for a couple of the new languages for English speakers to come into beta. I want to add them to my little trail of flags.

March 31, 2014

1571 words for the course and of course, you can always enrich your vocabulary by reading or utilizing materials other than Duolingo.

That is great, herzlichen Glückwunsch! I just wondered, did you rush through it or did you always repeat all the lessons which were not golden anymore? I am trying to keep the trees golden and it takes lots of time (but I feel that first when I redo lessons I really learn them!)

Greets from Spain :-)

March 30, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/buunny

For the first half the tree, I never continued to a new lesson unless everything was golden, but then they changed the algorithm for the decay of the tree and I just continued on to the end. When I'm done with all five of the trees, I'm going to go back and make them all gold again. I could probably gain another level in each that way. I wouldn't say I rushed through any of them, except once I got to the end out of excitement. I've spent nearly a year on all of them. My one year duolingo anniversary is coming up in April. I just want to finish them by then.

March 30, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/puppy7989

Well done !! I am having sooo much trouble keeping my tree golden. Gold at night - then usually at least four coloured circles the following morning (and I haven't even done anything!!) I am actually making more and more mistakes redoing the lessons over and over because I am annoyed they have decayed (AGAIN) so I don't pay attention properly,(very childish I know) type the answers quickly (hitting the keyboard firmer than I ought ) etc etc and lose hearts willy-nilly; so frustrating. Serves me right :) Might have to adopt your approach and let it decay so I can get to the end! Like 12345ann I try to adopt the "It's good revision approach" but I think I am too immature (or at lest my inner child is)

March 31, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/buunny

Haha. I do the same thing. It drove me insane. I'm just going to go back to them later.

March 31, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/hyeonji_

Congratulations! Aren't you mixing it up? Learning multiple languages at the same time is surely confusing. But anyway. Good job.

March 31, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/buunny

I don't mix them up. That stopped happening a long time ago for me because each language has a distinct sound and it's easy to tell when something doesn't fit it after you've practiced it for so long.

March 31, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/wj677

As a relatively newcomer I am curious about how the French tree ties in with the DELF levels. I had the impression that Duo Lingo should get you to about B1 standard but when I see people have completed the tree in a matter of weeks and are at levels way below level 25 (my own estimations is that I should finish my tree within 3 months of starting and probably level 15 at the most), how do you get to B1 using Duo Lingo once you have completed your tree?

March 31, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/Indimellem

I don't think you necessarily end up at a B1-level. You probably can if you also practise the language in other ways - like find someone to have conversations with (who won't mind correcting you) for example. Duolingo teaches you a bunch of words, some grammar structure and, if you have the audio on, pronounciation which is mostly right. But to be at a B1 level you would also have to be able to use that knowledge to form your own sentence, pronounce them right-ish and understand what someone says in real life (and real time (I find that a strange concept. I mean, opposed to what? Fake time?)) - and since that situation is pretty far from what Duolingo teaches you it can't stand alone if you want to master the language. Besides, how much you gain from the program also depends on how often you strengthen the skills and whether you look grammar up you don't understand.

March 31, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/wj677

I agree with you regarding using other learning tools and so I have french lessons on skype and listen to audio books etc.. But I am sure I heard the founder of Duo Lingo say in a Ted Talk, and then repeated by others, that a person can get to B1 standard using Duo Lingo. That was one of the main reasons I started here as opposed to other sites like Memrise. Just curious how they can claim it or worked it out.

March 31, 2014

April 1, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/buunny

I have to practice everything more. I still want to improve it more in all ways.

April 2, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/BastouXII

I think if one really wants to attain fluency, immersion (true immersion, as in living by oneself in a place where only this language is spoken) is needed at some point.

April 2, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/buunny

I don't know about that, but I think you definitely need to talk to people. Like before I discovered Duolingo, I would go to French chatrooms and just talk to people there to practice writing. I think in some way you have to put yourself in some situation that doesn't allow you to use anything, but that language.
