Thrown under the bus by Duolingo

The fine folks in Pittsburgh have decided to shadow-ban my "burner0" account without the least warning and for reasons known only to themselves, though I suspect my criticisms of Luis and the direction of the company have a lot to do with it.

By my reckoning, this will render the answers to at least 1200 questions in the Russian forum invisible, so I hope the Mods have fun explaining why "nobody answers questions in the Russian forum."

To the extent that Duolingo forum has become a useless kill-time, it's not a disaster, but it really does speak to Duolingo's cavalier disregard for its long-time users and its utter indifference to improving the quality of its product. Funny that a user who actually posts substantive answers gets the shaft while hundreds of spamming children are allowed to run riot.

Normally a warning should be sent to you before any action is taken. However, at the moment that can be difficult as there is a way to send people a warning, but if they don't put in a valid email address they will never receive that warning.

The best you can do is send an email to abuse@duolingo.com, tell them your problem and tell them to at least give you an explanation.

That is a real shame. I've just checked a couple of recent threads where both of us had posted: not only your comments are not there, the entire branches containing those are now gone (including my responses etc.). Sorry to tell you but you've never existed... This is outright 1984-ish.

On a more personal note, while I did not always agree with you, I really valued your input, and I am sure it was even more invaluable to people studying Russian & English. It is beyond comprehension why they would decide to nuke it; erasing all traces of your posts is like cutting off the nose to spite the face. Unfortunately, I feel that this fits the recent pattern of complete disregard to the free human capital that DL has managed to accumulate. Well, it's their program, but decisions like this feel completely brain-dead...

P.S. Meantime, here is a recent example of what is being kept: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/24115042$comment_id=24142871 (no criticisms of Luis or the direction in which he takes the platform though).

Indeed. On the one hand, it's a Chekist mentality, completely familiar to any student of Russian history, cf. "the Commissar vanishes."

On the other hand, it's not even that. Worse, it's laziness and utter indifference to the welfare of the site. It's vandalism for vandalism's sake. The discussion forum is held together with dirty Band-Aids, frayed duct tape, and the fragile goodwill of a scant handful of unpaid, infinitely patient volunteers. So, go ahead an delete one of your most active contributors for some unknown (and probably completely imagined and unknowable) peccadillo. Why not, when one suspects they'd like nothing more than to eliminate the Discussion Forum entirely?

I'm sorry how you've been sent to the Memory Hole. How democratic, Duolingo. Duolingo has gone downhill lately, they're using shameless money-grabs such as the health/gems system on iOS, and they are also partnering with Pearson, a Lawful Evil megacorp. What's worse, the premium course is leaking into the volunteer-built course, messing up the answers. And guess who has to provide free labor to fix this mess up? That's right. The hardworking volunteers.

This is a great shame, Burner0[0]. Let's hope this will be rectified soon or has been already. I don't know how many times I've written, "what Burner0 says is right," but it is quite a few.

Have you contacted staff? It's not the first time I've seen a strange shadowban, and the others have ended up being overturned so it's certainly worth trying. I and probably anyone who's been even slightly involved in discussions in the Russian course would back you up, if that counts for anything.
