"It is." in German?

This question came up in a conversation with a friend. We were wondering if it would be correct to answer somebody with "Es ist." or "Ja, es ist." in German. For example, in English, if I were to say: "Is that an apple?", someone could respond with "It is." and that would be correct for English.
Does it work the same way for German? Could I respond with the direct translation "Es ist." to the same question in German or is that just an English thing? This may seem like a dumb question, but these things are always interesting to me.:)
