i came up with two scenarios where it would make sense (then i realized you need to use the definite article so that's probably why it's wrong): 1) "Piros lámpánál én olvasok." every time i'm by a red lamp, i read. others may do something else, but i read. 2) "Piros lámpánál én olvasok." - i am the one who reads by a red lamp.

Would "Olvasok a piros lampá mellett " be ok as well, although I realize they are trying to get us to use -nal, née suffixes

"Olvasok a piros lampá mellett" is also correct to say, if you are reading by the lamp/beside to the lamp; the nal/nél case is more-or-less the equivalent of English "by/near/at", therefore not necessarily beside the lamp, but in its vicinity. Both answers could therefore be accepted in this sentence (I think). I found this thread useful to help me understand the difference between mellett and the adessive case seen in this lesson. I hope it can help you too: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/22142630/Difference-between-adessive-case-and-mellett
