Is er necessary in this sentence? I could not actually undestand why it is there. Would the sentence be weird without it?

I'm not a native Dutch speaker so maybe somebody who is can correct me here if I'm wrong, but it seems that "er" is always necessary when referring to a number of something where the something is only implied.

So for example:

"I saw two trees" = "ik zag twee bomen"

but

"I saw two (of them)" = "ik zag er twee"

or

"She still has one shoe" = "ze heeft nog één schoen"

but

"She still has one (of them)" = "ze heeft er nog één".

Hope that helps :)

Technically, "...of them" translates as "er ... van", where only "van" is left out

Yes, 'er' is necessary. Without 'er', the sentence is wrong.

I think it means “of them”. But when I put that on the end it marked it as wrong.
