Nosotras vs. nosotros

How do I know which of these to use. I was thinking "nosotras" was when it was about women, but I don't think that worked.

exactly like in french, if not everything is female, use male preposition/conjugation...

In portuguese is like this too. =)

Only a female speaker will ever use "nosotras" because it literaly translates to "us girls". As a guy, you don't need to worry about ever using "nosotras" because "we" includes you and you are a male, thus it will always be "nosotros"

No, it is not the object being consumed that determines the -os or -as, it is the gender of the group performing the action. In the first sentence "We (a group of men or a mixed group) eat rice." And in the second "We (a group of only women) drink milk." It just so happened in these examples that the gender of the group matched the gender of the item they consumed.

Nosotras is the feminine for of Nosotros so you would use it for a feminine group. Although if you are a guy you will never use nosotras because it means "We"

nosotras is feminine, nosotros is "we" in a masculine or mixed gender connotation.

https://www.duolingo.com/jkstuck

Nosotros mean we, it is used when the "we's" are all males or males and females. NosotrAs also means we but is only used when the "we" is all female.

A word a man will never say: "Nosotras" = "We (girls)".

If this is random coincidence I should be at the casino. I run into the nosotros/as error at least once per lesson.

Example: We drink the water. Counts incorrect: Nosotros bebemos el agua. Counts correct: Nosotr@s bebemos el agua.

This mistake happens in various words at least once per lesson.

I was so confused when I got this wrong but now I know it isn't me…it's the lesson because how am I supposed to know if the group is all women when they ask the question. Thanks.

Here is a way to possibly avoid the " nosotras. nosotros" issue. don't use either. You can simply conjugate the verb.. thus omitting "ellos. ellas" "nosotros/as". It's worth a try . Good luck

"Nosotras" means "we" or "us" when 100% of the people in the group are women. "Nosotros" is used when there is at least one man.

In one of the tests I got the following:

Nosotros comemos el arroz. Nosotras bebemos la leche.

I guessed that the food or drink gender told me what to use, as it gave no idea of if the group was male or female. Was it an error in the test or do some verbs take one form over the other?

https://www.duolingo.com/Jaelabi

It was just a coincident that that happened. "Nosotros" is used if there is any male in the group, while "nosotras" is used for a group made completely of girls.

Hello ! Unfortunately neither food nor drink, are determining factors in the conjugation of verbs, nor does the sex of the speaking person have anything to do with the with the noun gender . Noun genders never change as they are set genders. Your examples # 1. Nosotros comemos el arroz : nosotros- there was at least one male in the group, thus nosotras could not have been used, even if the ratio was 1/99. # 2.Nosotras bebemos la leche: nosotras was used because there were no males in the group, there were only females. In both sentences , the words nosotros and nosotras can be interchanged and both sentences would still be correct. Therefore el arroz , and la leche did not determine whether nosotros, or nosotras was to be used. I don't know if this will help at all . Good Luck !

I hope what I wrote was not too confusing, cause after I wrote it I was like "WHAT" !

I was thinking this way too -- as the practice "failed" me for using nosotras when typing what I heard; e.g. Nosotras leemos las palabras. The correct answer was nosotros -- which of course makes no sense. 1) I don't know the gender of the group the sentence is referring to, and 2) it is a woman speaking in DuoLingo, so I my answer was more correct, no? Anyway, a VERY minor frustration and this thread has my understanding cleared up either way! Cheers!

** EDIT

WHOA .... hold on. I just heard and typed this: Nosotros leemos los libros. And it failed me again saying the answer was Nosotras. What gives!!!

*** EDIT Crap ... I just realized I am supposed to be picking up the different sound (inflection) from the speaker and working out whether it is Nosotros or Nosotras!! Silly me. Ok, confusion over!! Back to my testing!

I understand what you are saying, however , there have been occasions when the sentence is written : "We read the books" , and I've gotten it wrong because they wanted "nostros instead of nosotras" and vice /versa. How to solve this dilemma ? It really sucks , especially when you have no more hearts left. A real Sophie's choice ! You make a very good point, Good luck ! A "Lingot" for your catch!

Nosotras - Feminine - We (a group of women or girls) Nosotros - Masculine, or a group of males and females

(Oh, that's what you said!)

I have seen nosotr@s for both male and female, this is more contemporary.

The correct way to write the ambivalent pronoun in spanish grammar is Nosotros(as). This convention is used for all such cases. And yes, that spelling with the at sign is contemporary and wrong.

Nosotras is when the entire group is strictly women; you would use nosotros to describe a group of men or mixed company.

Thanks for the reply. What I am saying is that there is no way to tell which scenario we are speaking in. So unless it's specified, hinted at, or even referenced in a previous question, I am constantly counted off for using Nosotros or Nosotr@s.

Example: I am asked to type in Spanish "We drink the water" and I answer "Nosotros bebemos el agua." -Incorrect, they wanted "as".

Within just a few questions I will have the same thing. I do so using "as" but this time it wanted "os". Some of these questions should, unless it's clear, accept both forms of the phrase instead of just one or the other. People miss easy points due to to strict of answers. When you're forced to answer in one form, when more than one are acceptable, that is "by the book" learning and not "real world".

Nosotros, nosotras (we)

Use nosotros/as when speaking about a group of which you are a part.

The only difference between nosotros and nosotras is in gender.

Nosotros is masculine and is used to refer to a group of men only or a group mixed of men and women. (Even if there are 99 women and 1 man, still use the masculine form.)

Nosotras is feminine and is only used when the entire group is female.
