I could be way off base here; but just knowing how usually courteous the Dutch are, and how much the expression "Shut up" is considered very ill-mannered in English; wouldn't "Be quiet and dance with me" be an acceptable alternative... or is the intent here to teach the rude expression? (that being "Zwijg"?)

Be quiet is accepted. Shut up is probably used here in reference to the song that uses those lyrics (shut up and dance).

Thanks, I got "cold feet" when it came to trying "be quiet"... and I never heard of that song; but now my curiosity is piqued! Thanks.

So... Is 'zwijg' in general not as rude as 'shut up'? :)

Hmm.. Not as rude, I suppose, but still a bit rude. It is not used that often either. "Wees stil" (lit. 'be quiet') is far more used.
