A sentence from “Dans la dèche à Paris et à Londres” that I didn’t understand.

Hello. I am came across this sentence in George Orwell’s “Down and out in Paris in London” (the French version), and I don’t understand it. Could somebody please translate it for me please? Thank you very much for your help

«Dans le quartier, il y avait une belle lurette qu’on ne pensait même plus à s’indigner quand un locataire déménageait à la cloche de bois»

(Une) belle lurette = a very long time

Déménager à la cloche de bois = move out without warning the landlord (generally at night, without paying the rent)
