Why is "cái bát canh" wrong?

It isn't. DL should accept it.

I think this is typically a case for the classifier. But apparently not so.

This seems like another case where the container (bát) is a measure word for the content (canh), acting like a classifier. In fact the child would drink the soup, not the bowl itself. Since the soup is the main object of the sentence, a classifier for the bowl is unnecessary. I don't know if it's actually wrong to add one though.

Dear DL, either explain why "cái bát canh" is incorrect, or else accept it. Thank you.

Agreed with everyone else, cái bát canh should have been accepted. I've reported this as a bug.

"Đứa trẻ không uống bát súp" is wrong???

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Joesamhobbs

Súp is more like what we could describe as a thick broth rather than soup so that's probably why.

"The kid does not eat the bowl of soup." I think so ! And you ?

Technically you can say that.

Tiếng Việt, dùng "ăn canh" khi canh đậm đặc (rau, củ quả hoặc thịt...), "uống nước canh" khi canh lỏng.

~ In Vietnamese, use "eat soup" when the soup is concentrated (vegetables or meat...), "drink soup" when the soup is liquid.
