How Much Fun Can I Have With Grammar?

I saw a video online about how simple the grammar of this language is, and I thought "How can I destroy this?"

First question: What is the deal with "tre" ? I get that it's an adverb, but what about in cases where it's describing adjectives?

I thought about it, and I realized that you could put an -a at the end! It just won't look right.

For example, when you say "The cake is very chocolaty", the sentence becomes something like "La kuko estas tre ĉokolada." This confused me because "tre" is describing the adjective, not the verb. The cake isn't very. It's chocolaty. If you were to end the sentence at "very", it would make sense grammatically, but not to me.

So, I did this: "La kuko estas trea ĉokolada." I really hope that what I did is acceptable.

Second Question: The inserted little bits like "-ej-" or "-in-" can't just be put anywhere, can they? If they can, then I will happily invent new words like the end of the world.

Bestejo - an animal place (but not a zoo, because that's zooparko).

Hominoj - a general referance to all females in the world.

Monas - to ... money? (I don't know. This one is just random fun)

Dolori - paining (like you've been stabbed or something.)

Do these make sense? My questions have gone unanswered for a while, and I need to know if I'm messing something up.

<First question: What is the deal with "tre" ? I get that it's an adverb, but what about in cases where it's describing adjectives?> You are absolutely correct! An adverb CAN be used to modify/describe an adjective. La tre bela kuko estas tre cxokolada kaj tre granda.

<Second Question: The inserted little bits like "-ej-" or "-in-" can't just be put anywhere, can they? If they can, then I will happily invent new words like the end of the world. Bestejo - an animal place (but not a zoo, because that's zooparko).> Actually, a zoo is not the only "place for animals". If you look at several examples of the suffix "-ej-", you will see that it is NOT random: lernejo / kuirejo / laborejo / studejo .

<My questions have gone unanswered for a while, and I need to know if I'm messing something up> On my computer, your post shows as only having been here for one hour?

People love to say how easy Esperanto is, and how flexible the grammar is. There is usually some truth to this - but it's also very easy to come away from those kinds of presentations with the wrong idea. If you seriously study Esperanto - for several hours a week for a few months - you will find that you can communicate in Esperanto, and this would almost certainly be at higher level than for a different language. Just keep that in mind when you find something which doesn't seem as easy as you initially thought.

"An adverb is a word, that modifies a verb... it modifies and adjective ... or else another adverb".

  • School House Rock.

So tre granda, strange nova, agrable varma. All adjectives modified by an adverb.

> So, I did this: "La kuko estas trea ĉokolada." I really hope that what I did is acceptable.

Nope. It should be "tre".

Dolori means "to hurt" as in "My arm hurts me" - mia brako doloras min. Note that it doesn't mean to cause to hurt. "Vi dolorigis min." You hurt me. You caused me to hurt.

Mia brako doloras. Sen "min". La verbo ne estas transitiva, tial uzi rektan objekton estas eraro.

For those reading along at home, "min" is required in this sentence.

  • My arm hurts.
  • Mia brako doloras min.
