Why not Es gibt, like usually for There are?

This sentence comes from the Pearson cooperation with Duolingo (see https://www.duolingo.com/comment/24052907 ).

They create sentences for their course -- unfortunately, they also spill into the public Duolingo course (see also https://www.duolingo.com/comment/24066422 ).

Some of their sentences are missing alternatives, introduce vocabulary which the public course does not cover or use words too early if they look like other words which are taught earlier, or are simply wrong. This is one of those cases of missing alternatives -- Es gibt zehn Kinder is a better translation, in my opinion.

I suggest that you contact Pearson about these issues - we have enough errors we've made ourselves before fixing or expanding what they've thrown to us. Or comment on one of the comment threads I linked to above.
