I am not sure whether it is me or duolingo getting this one wrong. but earlier duolingo used nguruwe (on its own - without anything like nyama ya ....) for pork, which I thought was pig. Now they use kitimoto which is what i have always understood to be pork. Perhaps there is something I am not understanding?

I suspect it is the accepted answers that are inconsistent, not you.
I just saw a question "Nguruwe" with the answer "Pork" at the top of the discussion page. It did accept my answer "pig" though.

I don't understand the words nyama ya. I used kula instead: they don't like to eat pork. Is that also possible?

Nguruwe is pig. Nyama ya is "meat of". Meat of pig = pork.

You put "Few Tanzanians like to eat pig". While it broadly means the same it's not really what is being asked for.
