Date in Greek

Γεια σας!

I am beginning a journal where I write down notes about Greek grammar, so on each page I would like to write the date so I can keep order. I faced a problem, how to write the date in Greek. Specifically, the correct case.

For example Wednesday, September 6th, 2017

Which case should I use?

Thanks for the offer. Spanish is interesting language and it is the most popular language on duolingo. Now I want first to study English and repeat French and Italian. I studied European civilization and I am interesting for the European languages.

There are the names of months like these: Γενάρης, Φλεβάρης, Μάρτης, Απρίλης, Μάης, Ιούνης, Ιούλης, Αύγουστος, Σεπτέμβρης, Οκτώβρης, Νοέμβρης, Δεκέμβρης,

where they try to imitate the Modern Greek suffixes used by the people. Some of them are used and you can find in many texts. Actually there are artificial words trying to imitate the people's language, where the month names were according to the agricultural tasks mostly.

There is a variety of these names and depends on the region of Greece, not used anymore, except in literature sometimes: http://friendshipiseverything.blogspot.gr/2013/01/blog-post_3799.html and this: http://www.newsbomb.gr/prionokordela/news/story/358488/pos-piran-ta-onomata-toys-oi-mines-toy-hronoy

As most of you know the name of the months are of Roman origin in many languages, including English.

Oh, I always confuse this point in English. Because in Russian language the same format as in Greek. It's a relief.

It seems that you have two choices:

  • Use the DD/MM/YYYY format, as Ioanna pointed out (and as most Greek people -including myself- casually do, so that date would be 06/09/2017, or

  • Use the longer format:

To write a date in Greek, you need the day, the number, the month in the genitive case and the year. So that date would be: Τετάρτη 6 Σεπτεμβρίου 2017

In case it helps, here are the 12 months of the year given in the genitive case, and not in the nominative, as most textbooks do.

  • Ιανουαρίου
  • Φεβρουαρίου
  • Μαρτίου
  • Απριλίου
  • Μαΐου
  • Ιουνίου
  • Ιουλίου
  • Αυγούστου
  • Σεπτεμβρίου
  • Οκτωβρίου
  • Νοεμβρίου
  • Δεκεμβρίου

I hope this helps. :-)
