Why does Duo capitalize one word in the "pick from a bunch of words" exercises?
Does anyone else find that there's no need to think about the language one is trying to learn when they see a capitalized word in the list of "pick from a bunch of words" style of excercise? The capitalized word is always first, so there's no need to struggle with figuring that part of the exercise out.
I hate this! Much prefer they remove the capital so I can struggle and learn better.
Haha. Yes, I do that every time. Never need to guess. I just always pick the capitalized one.
There are other aids. E.g. When you find only one verb in the group... there's no guessing.
True, but depending on language direction, you either need to identify which of the foreign language words is a verb, or know where in the sentence of your local language to place the verb. It's less of a tell than mindlessly taking the capitalized word.
There have been times when I made a logical sentence out of the words given then checked the new language to see if they fit. And it worked. Often I do the same skills on both the Android...with all its help... and the web to be sure I'm doing the lesson. This is a self-learning site so we have to be careful not to just finish the skill.
lol. But Hey, it's not cheating if they give it to me. It's not like I'm going out of my way to find information that isn't right there in front of me.
But I'm with you. I would much rather it be corrected.
Well if you don't want too, just close your eyes, blind pick and hope you get it right. :)
I have tested the system a few times when there was the same word used twice, capitalized and in lower case, by using the lower case as the first word in the sentence and Duo still counted it as correct.
Yes. As long as it's the correct word, it won't matter if it is upper or lowercase.
Don't look at the available options in the answer until you've thought about it yourself first. I cover the answer boxes with my thumb until I think of what I would say, and if I would have got the answer wrong, I intentionally press the wrong box so Duo knows I'm weak on that sentence/area.
Really don't like the boxes system at all.
I think that's good advice as a workaround to the capitalization issue. But it's just a workaround. Assuming the box system is a good one (I understand you don't think it is), then I shouldn't have to use my thumb - it's a smart phone; weird finger use shouldn't be needed.
While the box system may not be optimal for learning, I think the concern belongs on a separate thread. Would likely inspire good debate. My 2 cents - I think it's useful the first time I pass through an exercise to get introduced to vocabulary. But I'd like to see it fade out as I repeat an area, requiring me to type out the answers (like the website requires).
That is actually a good idea. I know people and more, that would have trouble with that because of 'honesty/cheating/ issues. However, I must try that.
Luis has posted about this on Reddit... (first comment)
I remember when taking university entry exams the correct first word was capitalized too. So what Duolingo is doing isn't first.
