How am I supposed to get a word from just learning the alphabet?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Riketvs1

You're supposed to click on the word to get the meaning when it's coloured golden. It's just how duo works

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/feanixium

Not only when its golden. You can click it when it has an underline

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/eve_everson1522

That's right.I love you feanixium!!!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kaleb.bran

No there needs to be a learning words and sentence usage segment like spanish

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/omgitsshangwe

Right! How am I supposed to talk to Jimin by just learning the alphabet! THIS IS A PROBLEM. >_<

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Nineth1611

Hey we have to learn the alphabet then words just like English but we will make it. Army!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/laila.nyli

Honestly this is harder than i thought to learn

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/idrawanime1

after u get down the alphabet reading korean is very easy don't worry

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kayor2523

It really is...I trying to keep going with it so I can sing all the lyrics to 6 of BTS songs.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Mo9FhX

Imagine the situation I'm in. I learned Japanese just in time for K-pop to become better than J-pop.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BeverlyMul

I want to understand CNBLUE don't think just learn the sound with a letter then keep moving forward it is just different like English do not ask why just open your mind and learn

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/HonestySco

It really is but we can do this! Fighting ^^

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/alexciaf2003

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JaneRingge

We can do it!! ARMY!!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JaneeceRic

army4life

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/thatonearmy

You have to learn Hangul and be able to pronounce syllables. You will get to the language once you have mastered the alphabet. And why is it that Armys are the ones trying to learn Korean? No shade, because I'm doing the exact same thing, for Jimin. Jimin stans unite!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/carmenmsouza

Its not that there arent other fandoms here, we just dont like to annoy people about our favs when they just want to learn korean :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/San_yuk_ta

or i'll ask my Namjoon to tutor me one he's not as busy, but he'll be jealous coz I'm doing it all for ChimChim

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Blessing389006

I didn't think of that

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Emily124226

Im not an army, but i like kpop. Its not strange since 1. there are A LOT of armys out there and 2. its not,,, strange lmao. Its like if you enjoy novelas a lot, you might wanna learn spanish so you can just know what they're saying. A lot of people start for kpop but keep going for other reasons yaknow. Idk just felt the need to say that haha no hate ily

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JaneeceRic

Haha! Wouldnt it be better if you didnt have to read subtitles for everything?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Tinakook

I am a Vkook stand

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Yoonmin15078

Lol yoonmin, vkook, and namjin are my life. I WAS learning Japanese BUT then I saw the beautiful being known as Min Yoongi and was eventually dragged into BTS and Kpop. Sigh Ive been here ever since because apparently once you Jimin you can't jimout.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Bobhilton2.00

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PinkMon

Why can't I just memorize all of this in my sleep.. Like you know how Namjoon got fluent from watching friends over and over... I watch a WHOLE lot of kdramas and only know like two words....

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/San_yuk_ta

he actually put in an enormous effort like watching the same things over and over once in English once Korean . But yeah, I get your point >.<

[deactivated user]

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kayor2523

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Lunangie_

Even harder when it isn't in your language but you are "fluent" in English, so you can practice your english learning Korean :'( (Spanish why?)

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Tris872596

      Well..ur not alone...

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/dabbie2000

I started learning Korean for the exact same reason but honestly it's really difficult and different from my mother tongue..But I'm sure we'll make it..

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Samy1919

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/GucciTaeTa1

Well, to talk to bby Mochi you will have to learn Korean, and the process of learning Korean is to learn the alphabet first. Also love yourself fellow ARMY

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/lustamacs

well guessing a word no-rae or what before knowing that thingy means 'rae'... that's the challenge! like a bloody IQ test.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kayor2523

I am still trying to figure out how they got song out of those characters

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/babymetaldaisuki

u have to know the alphabet to speak a language

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kayor2523

I noticed later on after you make it through the alphabet then you get to other vocabulary words and phrases so I am maintaining patience.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/San_yuk_ta

worry not they're learning english for us

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RileyAW

Get past the alphabet, it's suppose to get you used to the sound of words and what certain words look like. You aren't suppose to learn any words yet. Once you pass the alphabet you will begin to learn how to structure and build words out of the alphabet you learned.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Bobhilton2.00

I was wondering why I was getting the word so much. I decided to look for a comment like this, so, yeah... um, bye.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kelario

          Came here to post that.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KaetoKit

YES. I was like "alrighty, not complaining"

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/janyooary

also came here to see if this happened to others lol i got it right every time so it was weird

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/TeoJr

Hi everyone, I'm not sure if I should be posting this here but the "flag" does not give me proper means to report what happened. So... near the end of the lesson this word was being repeated at least 4 (four) times, even getting it correctly. Known bug? This also happened once when I tried to take the test instead of doing each lesson (the repetition). Not specifically with this word though.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/WooshieWooshin

If you were answering with the translated words, it wants to ti answer with the Korean characters ^^ The same happened to me

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/rosmalg

So it sounds more like a u than an o ?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/HanKang_2003

No... It must be the accurate sound of 'Oh'

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PERCE_NEIGE

What is it in phonetic alphabet?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/idrawanime1

I definitely refer you all to look into memories for the alphabet and at talk to me in korean on youtube for pronunciation problems. Also if you have any questions about building words try looking at the free pdfs that korean 101 gives they helped me a lot on basic spelling and writing white these sites are good for learning what the characters look like its easier to write and pronounce after I read the korean 101 pages they also have lots of practice pages that help. hope this helps you all like it did me :)

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/XLtb1wp5

This "N" sounds like "D": Am I hearing it incorrectly?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RowanM.1

If you are, I am too, because it sounds like a D to me as well!

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/milouroby

Can someone explain to me how to pronounce this "r" sound please?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/OfficialWeiss

          Here's how I Learned mine. .

The "L" is pronounced differently depends on where "ㄹ" is located.

Like for Example, the "-L" at the end of a syllable or word sounds like a cross between an English "L" and "RL" in 'Girl' or 'Curl'.

Cause they're considered as an Unaspirated Consonant.

          -The Unaspirated consonants are pronounced differently depending on their position within a word, *ex;

          ㄹ- Initial Sound~ r/l- Middle Sound~ -r- Final Sound~ -l ㄷ- Initial Sound~ t- Middle Sound~ -d- Final Sound~ -t ㅂ- Initial Sound~ p- Middle Sound~ -b- Final Sound~ -p ㅈ- Initial Sound~ ch- Middle Sound~ -j- Final Sound~ -t ㄱ- Initial Sound~ k- Middle Sound~ -g- Final Sound~ -k-

And one more. . . An Unaspirated Consonant , when preceeded by 'h'(ㅎ) as the final consonant of the previous Syllable , becomes aspirated - compare 안다(an•da)[to Hug/Embrace] and 않다(an•t'a)[to not do something]

          Hope this helps.

And Admins. Correct this if I'm wrong. Thanks!!!!

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JohnBeers

A YouTube video titled "How to Pronounce the ㄹ in Korean" by Motivate Korean explained it the best for me. Tip of the tongue starts at the same spot as the English 'd' then comes down flat behind your bottom teeth.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AdriSeMin

It's simple... It's about of the position. If the ㄹ is up, the sound is "R" If the ㄹ is down, the sound is "L"

For example: 를 the romanization is "reul" and the pronuntiation is "rul"

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/feanixium

Pronounce 'curl' or "girl" in a scottish accent and get rid of all other letters but the r. Im spanish sonit comes naturally to me. But thats he sinplost and best waybi can explain it.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Mayunima

          R sound is a mixture between R and L

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Peter_B_Parker

Someone explained it to me as positioning your mouth and tongue as if youre about to make a 'D' sound, but instead make an 'L' sound which should get you that in-between r and l sound

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/roberto727

Good post by OfficialWeiss. Korean vowel sounds are pretty consistent, though some Koreans claim to pronounce 애 and 에 differently. However, many pronounce 네가 (you) niga to distinguish from 내가 (I) naega. There are dialects where stress is different, and it is also fairly common for some words spelled with 오 to be pronounced as if it were 우. The consonants, however, change as reported, depending on position and what character they are juxtaposed with. The ㄹ by itself between two vowels is close to the English "r" sound, but, unlike English, the tip of the tongue touches the palate

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/XLtb1wp5

It is still pronouncing as "d" when it should pronounce as "n" ; help :)

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JerD10

Sounds like doodeh to me. Are these sounds even close?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KnowledgeSeekerE

Lol, yes, they are, from an American pronunciation...

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KnowledgeSeekerE

The ㄴ is sometimes pronounced as d!? How is it?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/DaianaG25

That's because you should put the tongue between your teeth, like biting the tip. Then, when you do the "n" sound it may sounds like "d" depending on the speed used.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/roberto727

Panglossa correctly points out there is only 1 "alphabet". Included in that one alphabet are 40 characters / letters. There are 14 basic consonants and 10 basic vowels, which GaryAhn listed. In addition there are 5 double consonants and 11 "combination vowels" / dipthongs.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AndrewKang763428

i thought this could also translate to "music" but i guess i'm wrong...

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/nleconte

          음악 is music.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Lola_The_B

Does anyone know the sound the second letter makes? :-)

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/leetaeoh489

          팬들이 망할 짜증나...

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/nleconte

망할: is it a strong expletive (to emphasize they are really annoying?

Rest reassured, I ask not to moderate, but for me to learn. Can I use it with anyone? Or only with close friends?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/DaliaSanchez96

It's nore but i hear dure

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RowanM.1

Yes, actually you're quite right. But like you, I hear that "dure" or "dore" sound, which is what led to my analogy above. Going to have to think of another way to remember the word now (maybe Norah Jones? Well, she's a singer).

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MinJaemin1

What means 아이노래? 노래 i know but...why 아이?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/EquanimousLingo

I am just combining words we have learned, so I combined the word for "child" and "song".. how would you say Children's song or child song?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ChemistryCube

probably a child song. But it should be 아이들의 노래

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/felicia440593

i dont understand how we know is it song

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/feanixium

Click or tap on an underlined word to see its translation

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Mueclainh

She says "nure" but I read "nore". Is this some kind of exception?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/sethaboeh

Its not necessarily an exception, its just the difficulty of trying to romanize the korean alphabet. This sound in Korean has a certaim way of being pronounced. Do not take the "o" romanization as a definite.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PERCE_NEIGE

It's difficult to romanize in English, but if you romanize in French, as sounds are closer, it would be easier (at least for some sounds). The difficulty is here because they didn't add a phonetic alphabet, it's a big flaw of this lesson in my opinion, but as it's only a beta, I hope many people will ask for it. When the transliteration of a sound into a language may vary, you absolutely need the phonetic alphabet.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/idrawanime1

always remember that the korean language isn't pronounced like other languages like the ㄹ character is heard as and r or l in english, and a ㅂ can be heard as a B or P its all just a part of getting familiar with the language same as how english only sometimes has a silent E. I believe it will just take a lot of getting used to the customs of a new way of speech.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Leejieung

Actually, we can say it 'nore', cuz real koreans also pronounce ae and e as equal.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/feanixium

Explenation: koreans. Logic:none that i know of.

          No offence to anyone

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Ria5678

What is the number of alphabets in korean?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ChemistryCube

          ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ ㄹ ㅁ ㅂ ㅅ ㅇ ㅈ ㅊ ㅋ ㅌ ㅍ ㅎ ㅏ ㅑ ㅓ ㅕ ㅗ ㅛ ㅜ ㅠ ㅡ ㅣ

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/panglossa

yes, only hangul. but of course they also know the Latin alphabet

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/efunston89

when it asks for translation am I meant to write in romanized Korean or English as it seems to accept either.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/carmeniero

if french or creole is your first language i will be easy. There is also a patter and relation between the e a u i y o

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PERCE_NEIGE

Yes, Korean sounds seems closer from French than from English. When they'll do Korean for French speaker, it will be easier to explain the sounds. I regret there's no phonetic alphabet translation here, it's very confusing. The French "u"; German "ü" and Korean "eu" seems exactly the same sound (are they?), and there are few languages that uses this sound.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/San_yuk_ta

it didn't accept the phonetic pronunciation in my case. What did you enter?

When you start to understand the kanji and romaji of the words, then you will start to memorize them. What I do is write down the alphabet in my notebook so I can memorize it, and the more you level up in the Alphabet stages-- the more easier you will understand it! Just a little tip from me ^-^

I kind of get it the symbols behind the first symbol kind of go back to the basics of the Korean alphabet for example for the a sound you have that one symbol and literally to change it to like da you would just add the D sound in front of the a sound symbol

An easy way to remember the meaning of this word (at least for me) is that it sounds a bit like "do re", the first two notes of the standard musical scale. (Or think of the classic song in The Sound of Music: "Doe, a deer, a female deer, ray, a drop of golden sun ...")

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/DaliaSanchez96

I am a little confused as to how I am supposed to translate this to the word song, from only learning a few letters of the alphabet. Someone explain something that I might not be understanding.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PERCE_NEIGE

No. That's 2 separate things. First they teach you the alphabet, showing you some words as examples, and then, after those lessons, you will learn only vocabulary.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/student14870

this section gave the same word in the same form 8 straight times. I think that is not what they intended. norae, norae, norae, norae, noarae, norae,....This is not a complaint. There was no way to inform them of this error on report. they need to add an other slot where you can type in the issue at least while they are in beta. This way people can let them no things that need to be ironed out.

            korean is hard to learn

            https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ChemistryCube

I agree. Even though I am a native speaker...

A random thought: I wish there was a Korean course on Duo for the speakers of Russian. Some sounds at least would be much easier to memorize with Cyrillic letters instead of Latin ones. For instance, ㅡ corresponds perfectly to Russian ы.

            https://www.duolingo.com/profile/fluffytranquil

I've studied Russian and that's how I remember it. ^_^

            https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PERCE_NEIGE

They'll do (if there are Russian/Korean bilingual people interested), but they almost always start with English to test.

I wonder why they don't insert phonetic alphabet, because it makes it harder to learn paradoxally when your native language sound is closer from Korean than English is.
