Question: Why the use of "stab" for the verb here? I know it's a Dutch thing, is there another use for "steekt" that suggests crossing?
'Stab'? I'm not sure where you get 'stab' from.
Oversteken = to cross [the road]
"steken" = to stab or to stick
But indeed, the separable verb "oversteken" has a very different meaning. Some other ones:
As OnkelD notes, "stab" is what I would call the hover translation offered. If it were not a familiar beginning to a joke, I probably would have put "stab" as well.
