Unable to get on Duolingo during Irma Hurricane

Good day... Just wondering what to do if our power goes out during the hurricane on Sunday Sept. 10th. I truly do not want to lose my points for being unable to access the program. It seems to me there was a place somewhere that we could go to and use around 10 points per day NOT to use the program, but for some reason, I cannot see it today. I would have asked a friend to enter into my Duo daily and use up my points to keep me current without losing everything after 2 straight years without missing.

Also, do we have to use points for each language we are learning to stay current? I have German and Italian going on and want to continue with those without any loss. Thanks for your prompt reply. Irma is approaching Florida soon. Dorothy

Here are a couple suggestions that you could use to get the required XP you need to keep up your streak, although you have already mentioned 1.

  1. Pick someone you trust who will have the time and skill to be able to do this.

  2. You will need to tell them your password, or change your password to something else if you don't want them knowing you current password, then let them know the new password.

  3. Set your XP for the lowest amount you can (1 XP). (Should you choose to just set it for 10, that is fine, because doing just one lesson gives you 10.)

  4. Every day, have the appointed person do the very first lesson in basics 1, just once (should not be hard). Make sure he/she=they, refreshes the page to where they can see the checkmark by the fire in the upper right hand corner.

  5. Also every day, have them check in the store to make sure a streak freeze is equipped, in case the missed a day.

Work around and suggestions:

If you would rather disregard everything I mentioned above, there is another option:

This will cost you a fair amount of lingots. If you should so choose too, instead of having them complete a lesson to acquire the needed amount of XP, have them every day, buy a streak freeze, instead of completing lessons. However, this being, your streak will stay the same, rather if they completed the lesson, it would move up every day.

Should you choose this option, I will provide you with a fair amount of lingots to help sustain your 'financial needs' for a however long you need.

Also,

Should you choose to just do the original (what I provided in steps), another tip:

If 'they,' do not know the language you are learning and are nervous that they somehow will get it wrong, or not complete the required task, you can always add a new language of one they know the very basics in (if any), and they can do that (basics 1, first lesson) every day to meet the required amount of XP, for it will still count. Then remove the language when you come back.

Most importantly: Stay safe!

Don't forget the 1XP "Timed practice" on the web, once your (web setting) goal has been set to 1XP.

Yes, that is true. However, I find it quicker just to do a lesson on the very first lesson of basics 1. Especially if someone else doesn't know that language (they'd most likely be able to do the very first lesson), then they wouldn't fare so well in the timed practice. It would be much quicker just to do the first lesson. Unless of course, they'd plan to do the first question in timed practice (provided they know it), and let the clock run out. Then getting 1 XP.

Hello Dorothy, I do so hope that you are able to stay safe through the hurricane. I understand your concern about being unable to do lessons. If you go to the lingot store then you may purchase a Streak Freeze which will allow you to keep your Streak for one full day of inactivity. Unfortunately that only works for one day. Regrettably I know of no other options. I wish that I could help more. Best wishes to you.

On the Android mobile app you get asked on Fridays, if you want to get an "Weekend amulet" for 30 lingots.
Once you are equipped with it, it is shown in the lingot store in Android app V3.55.1.

This happend to me today (Friday).

Boy oh boy, do I ever appreciate all the useful comments everyone shared today. I was able to find the place to go with your help and someone will be able to sign in on my behalf and click on STREAK FREEZE for 10 points a day, should our power go out, so that I do not lose two years of points. THANKS A WHOLE BUNCH FOR YOUR INVALUABLE ASSISTANCE TODAY!

Also, I forgot to add that you do not have to earn points in each language to maintain your daily streak. Doing lessons or reviews in any one language will work. I do not know what you have your daily goal set to but if you set it to the lowest setting then a single lesson a day will be all it takes to keep your daily streak active.

There are individual language streaks, which are only visible on the web with DuoTweak in your user profile (with some more workaround as old scripts do not work with the new website).
You see those language streaks on the mobile apps!!

Because of this she has to earn points for every language listed (it would be wise).

The "Streak freeze" only works for the global streak badget, which you can also repair on the mobile apps.
But the individual language streaks will be reset to 0 nevertheless, if you do not practice DAILY (reaching your coach goal PER language).

I've guessed from the phrasing of mails being sent out that streaks for individual languages was somehow kept, but on the other hand the length of them being claimed in the mails is not correct.

I am in Irma's path too. I fear I will lose my streak but I'll be happy if I manage to survive. Best of luck to you! Stay safe.

Can you go to the lingot store and buy a "streak freeze" or check if it is EQUIPPED?

I am not sure if you are eligible for the freeze:
http://www.duolingo.com//users/Risenshine165: freeze-permissions":false

There is no variable set that you are equipped for a streak freeze...

Do you have an Android smartphone?

Do you think that the global power loss will be for the whole infrastructure / telco providers (GPRS, UMTS 3G, LTE 4G, etc.) as well and that a mobile phone would not work anymore?

I advice you you set the sub-forum (with editing) for this thread to Troubleshooting.

It does not really have someting to do with learning the German language, therefore the sub-forum "German" is not the right one.

why would be around for your power to go out? you should not be near enough where your power goes out... I mean it's a dumb idea to stick around, so go visit Aunt Carol in California.
