When I had plăcintă in Romania, I didn't think of them as pies at all. They were filled with cheese, so more like a fried cheese danish. Weird.

Same Latin / Greek root as placenta! - The deviation is not in Romanian which retains the original meaning.

dexonline.ro defines plăcintă as pretty much anything baked that has a filling. in my experience that's usually a sweet filling and pretty much anything baked that qualifies as desert is a form of plăcintă.
