Why do people follow others when there is no activity stream to chat around with people?

Why? People have no use following other people right now. Is the person you are following is going to help you? It maybe in the discussions but are they going to chat with you or if they are a native speaker of Spanish and you want help from them for Spanish, then are they going to help you by following them?

Pls answer my question. Thank you!

Some people find it motivational to have others on their leaderboard to compete with. There are also those of us who still hold out hope that Duo will make good on the promised "new car" as Luis called it and a new form of communication with be implemented.

Yep, personally I'm hoping that they'll bring it back and that's the main reason I bother to follow people (the second one being it motivates me to have people to compete with, as someone else mentioned)

If they actually bothered to spend some engineer time on it, I'm sure they could come up with some solution to make it so that the activity stream doesn't cause such a huge strain on their systems. It's not like this problem hasn't been solved before.
