Sometimes numbers instead of words are accepted. Why not always?

In general, numbers are accepted when translating into the base language (here: English) but not when typing in the target language (here: German).

One reason is that only this way, the program can check that you know how to say the numbers. If you just write "1, 3, 5", you might be reading them "one, three, five" in your head and have no idea what they are called in German.
