Since we have several that have hatched recently (or are about to) - Japanese, High Valyrian, Korean, Klingon, Czech - does anyone have any insight on what's next for the incubator?

Personally, I'm shocked that Arabic has not been added, yet, given the number of native speakers and apparent demand. I'd love to see both that and Farsi added.

Anyone know what's on the horizon?

I've heard a rumor about three months ago that Zulu will be developed.

I don't think Duolingo normally let this out ahead of time. However there have been reputable people referencing someone from Duolingo, whose comment I haven't seen, in an interview saying something along the lines of Mandarin by the end of the year.

Presumably they are already working on it internally. If the course will be as short as the Japanese one (which they also worked on internally), end of the year is still possible.

people forget that Duolingo is a totally FREE learning resource. no one should be SHOCKED because languages haven't been added yet...as it is, there is a good number of languages, so we can't complain!!! Duolingo aren't under any obligation to produce more languages...we should be grateful for the languages that are already on Duolingo...don't misunderstand me though, it's great to hope for new ones and it's great when new ones are added...

I'm not complaining, just genuinely curious. I love Duolingo! (FWIW, I am an event host for two languages, so I volunteer a significant amount of time to both the community and the company.) However, I do not know the selection process or why some languages are chosen over others (I'm sure there's much more that goes into it than we know), especially when there is high demand. And it is perfectly reasonble to express surprise over that fact. I'm not being demanding. I know people like to complain a lot on here, but don't confuse "shock" with "outrage". These are vastly different things.

I think you misunderstood me. XD I wasn't 'having a go' at u, I was just saying that we have to be content with the FREE languages we have...even though it would be grrrrrreat to have more! I didn't think you were outraged or demanding either.......just thought I'd put up my opins about how great the site is already!!!!!! and I think it would be great to see Arabic too. Keep up the good work for the community and the company...

I hope they do soon. Not that I have time to learn it right now, lol, but it's a pretty significant language worldwide. I'm all for saving obscure languages - I know that's really important. But it seems the more widely spoken ones would be bread and butter. Well, what do I know, though. Lol I assume they know what they're doing.

The Forbes article is worth a quick read. Unfortunately not direct quotes, so the info is a little garbled.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/elaineramirez/2017/09/07/duolingo-korean-language-course-launch

What I find interesting is that they may be creating cross-courses between the asian languages, which should bring in a huge number of users. (I realise that isn't the same as adding new languages, but courses like those, and the ones teaching English, provide a lot of economic benefit to people)

Haha Yes! I've actually been studying Japanese on my own for almost two years, now. And I think I've learned more with Duolingo than I have using any other method. The gamification and repetition just speaks to my brain. I think Hindi would be really fun. It would be nice to be able to pick out some words when I'm watching Bollywwod moves, too. xD
