I think jails are more of a temporary holding facility while prisons are where you go when sentenced.

Not entirely correct. You can go to jail after sentencing. See https://www.hg.org/article.asp?id=31513

So the question is, does Dutch have a similar distinction with different translations for jail and prison or are they both translated with "gevangenis"?
