Best language(s) to learn for international business?
Hello! I am currently a college student interested in studying international business and wanted to ask everyone's opinion on what language would be best for me to learn. I am interested in doing business in Latin America, Australia and Oceania, Europe, and potentially Africa. I am already learning Spanish and have a fairly good grasp of the language and would like to take up another language and start taking college-level classes in this language. I'm thinking either German or French. I don't think I want to take a language that would be very hard to learn (i.e. Chinese or Arabic) because I am already taking Spanish in college and don't want to bite off more than I can chew. Any thoughts would be much appreciated! Thanks!
What's the business? Hard for anyone here to make a serious recommendation without knowing what the business itself is. "Business" is basically a meaningless word - if one's sources are in Colombia, Spanish matters; if they're in Albania Spanish is useless.
Learn both German and French (at whatever pace you can). Both are spoken by many people and are quite widespread.
I agree both are very useful in Europe I would likely start with German personally as it is more similar to English yet far enough phonetically from Spanish mixing would be less of a problem. also because Germany is one of the biggest economies in Europe.
I personally wouldn't learn French while you are taking classes in Spanish as it could mix the languages up for you. also want to add that any additional familiarity with a slavic language will help as well :)
Don't count Chinese out just yet there is a mandarin course on memrise that will allow you to learn with the Latin alphabet and it is quite good from my experience so far.
Maybe you're interested in Tanzania? It's a very different and unique choice but it has a better economy than a lot of other African countries and Swahili is absolutely amazing. With other languages you might get it confused with Spanish. Tanzania is growing a lot and knowing English is a really good quality to have there. There are upsides and downsides, especially being in Africa, but it would be such an interesting experience to go there. A lot of colleges have study abroad in Tanzania so maybe your college does too. Try Russian or German. Both are spoken by a lot of people in Europe, and neither of them is as hard as Arabic, Chinese, or Japanese.
(Edit: Portuguese and Spanish would be very useful in Latin America, and if you are interested in Suriname, try Dutch. For Africa: French and Swahili would be reasonable choices. Oceania: They mostly speak English and Polynesian languages in Oceania and Duolingo doesn't have a Polynesian language, so English would suffice.)
