Same as the sentence given... Dutch language tend to be specific compared to English, although I think it's also acceptable to say, 'De familie is in de woonkamer', but not preferable

Five family members in the room. Four sitting, one standing. Is it zit zitten is or zijn? In British English: the family - with one exception - are sitting. How would an American construct this sentence? The family - with one exception - is sitting? Hmm.
