Option to Permanently Gild Alphabet Skills
I've been thinking about this recently and I really think there should be an option to permanently gild the Cyrillic, hangeul, and hiragana alphabet skills in their respective courses without taking a placement test. At the beginning you should be able to click a third option besides "Placement Test" and "Start from the beginning": "I know the alphabet." The alphabet skills are so annoying to strengthen, and many people learn alphabets better "on paper" anyway. They should be an optional part of their respective courses. (ps I know hiragana is a syllabary I just used alphabet for brevity's sake.)
In my experience, if you're consistently using the words and phrases accurately, the alphabet skills will eventually become pretty solidly gold. For example, I haven't had to strengthen the alphabet skills in Russian or Hebrew in ages.
This does depend on the course - I think the Greek alphabet lessons are a little dodgy in this respect, as some of the alphabet sentences are a little... lacking... - but in general, they don't take much upkeep. If you run through them a few times and make few or no errors, then they should stay gold quite consistently. I don't know if this will work quite the same for Japanese/Korean as the setup is different, but at the same time, I don't see why it wouldn't.
All this said, you don't have to keep them gold. Sure, it's nice to have a gold tree, but it's possible to gild the rest of your tree/rely on SRS for it and just completely ignore those first few skills. Chances are they will start to become solid gold anyway, but even if they don't, it's not that big a deal. The only things it really affects are general strengthening (which afaik is actually the least efficient way to gild skills anyway) and the look of the tree. It's possible to ignore them completely. I think I'm studying (to varying degrees of seriousness) all the languages that have a different writing system on Duolingo, and once I'm confident with it, I basically ignore the alphabet skills. Depending on the course, the alphabet skills can stay good for months without attention, and even if they don't, it doesn't matter.
