Actually, "pupil" is "pupilă", both as the pupil of the eye, but also as a teacher's protégé, although this second one is not so common these days - it used to be 100yrs ago, with the home-schooling of rich kids or a specific kid attending a specific school on recommendation from a specific teacher, or some such relationships. (I know that in English "pupil" designates all school kids, but our word was adapted/adopted for a more particular situation.)
