Problems with dictation translation
I'm having trouble when Duolingo asks me to translate orally from Spanish to English--correct answers only work a small percentage of the time... it will often tell me it's wrong when it's right. Any suggestions? this is frustrating. Thanks!
I went to my Duolingo settings and turned off my mic option. That eliminated all of those kinds of questions. I just say everything out loud instead, which gives me more practice than when I wait for Duolingo to prompt me.
To get to your settings, hover the mouse over your username in the blue bar at the top of the screen. Click "Settings". Once you make the change, click the green "Save" button, or nothing will happen.
Duo seem to have removed that option on the website settings. Now there are only switches for Sound affects and Speakers. Is that on purpose or have the programmers made a booboo.
PS I can turn speaking exercises on/off on the iOS app but not on the website.
psionpete, I just checked my desktop settings and turning of the mic is still an option. Maybe it was a temporary absence?
Is translating orally an app feature? I've never been asked to do that on the website.
marcy, at least some courses have exercises where you can speak into the mic. But, possibly not all of them. Spanish has it, if your mic is on. However, it's purpose is just to encourage you to get practice speaking in the language. If you just say everything out loud as you are going through the lessons, without waiting to be prompted, you'll get more practice than if you turn your mic on. :)
Yes, I understand. It's the translating part of yolobean's question that sounds unfamiliar to me. I'm wondering if they should possibly be repeating or writing what they hear, instead of trying to translate.

Oh no! Turning off speakers will likely disable the portions that require you to speak into your mic as well. If I could get you and psionpete to each fill out a report at the link in the bottom of the Help page here: https://www.duolingo.com/help That would be great. Reports that are as thorough as possible are the best. So, what operating system and browser you're using (if on desktop) which app you're using (if not on desktop), and a screenshot if possible.

Usagi, I am never asked to speak on the website version. I have read in discussions by other users that you have to have chrome to get the speaking activities, and I don't. Even if I were able to suddenly get the speaking activities, I would turn them off, as I do on the app, because they are too inconsistent. However, I will fill out a report if you still want me to, if you think it will help others. Just let me know. :-)
I have used Chrome consistently for a long while and I have also turned off my mic two or so years ago. So, I hadn't realized. Maybe it is more widely known to staff and non-chrome users. Sending a report is entirely up to you and whether or not you have the time and energy/desire to send one. It is very thoughtful of you to be concerned for the experience of other community members. :)
Thanks for the replies, everyone! We figured out how to turn off the microphone on the iPad and are no longer getting that type of question. I also submitted a more detailed report.
