Double 7 day streak

Hello! I am learning Duolingo Japanese on ipad, and I have come to the conclusion that it does not make sense to buy the 7 day streak for 5 lingots and double the lingots to 10. After every 7 day streak, does one not automatically gain 5 lingots? Just wondering...

And now that I am saying this, the whole shop looks differently, and suddenly I have 1000 gems to spend ...??? What is this all about???

Thank you so much for your comments/help! Now it is much clearer to me, and it tells me that playing double or nothing does make sense

No, you don't get 5 lingots automatically every 7 days. You get lingots every 10 days of your streak, according to your streak length. So, after 10 days you get 1, after 20 days you get 2... after 100 days you get 10 and so on. For example, today I got 54 lingots for my streak of 540 days. I also regularly play "double or nothing" even though I have 3600 lingots already and I have no idea what to do with them. Oh, well...

You DO get 5 lingots after 7 days if you take the wager 'Double or Nothing'. After 7 days of keeping your freeze you get 10 lingots. That is 5 lingot winnings plus your original wager of 5 lingots is returned. In other words after 7 days you are 5 lingots up on the deal. If you repeat the wager every week you will increase your lingots by 5 lingots per week.

The above happens on the browser interface. If you are using the iOS app they have changed the currency to Gems and I think you can make a wager of 50 gems and get 100 gems at the end of 7 days if you keep your streak. In fact I think you can do both wagers at the same time.

He asked if you get them automatically. I wrote no. Of course you get them if you play "double or nothing".
