Names in French

Is there a certain way to translate names into French? Like, for example, my dog's name is Maximus. How would I translate his name??? Thanks

It's usually just the same as it is in English

"Maximus" is the Latin name (meaning "the tallest/greatest") and the French name is "Maxime".

Like The_Angry_Mango said, it's usually just the same in English. I believe that Maximus' name would be Maximus in French. But there are exceptions, not many though. Mary-Marie for instance.

Names may have equivalents but they don't translate (apart from some biblical and historical names). The Romans had Maximus', the Russians have Maxims, the French have Maximes and the English have Maxwells, but if Maxime goes to England, his name is still Maxime.
