I'm having a little trouble understanding the word order in this sentence. Why is it not "hij zegt dat je hem loslaten moet" ? Am I missing something here?

Dutch be like shuffle all the words of the sentence, and let that be the sole and only right way to say it

Is this a metaphor for romance? Or is this a prisoner talking?

Metaphor for romance is not very likely.

In the most probably scenario, you physically grabbed somebody and he (or another person) is telling you to let go.

Could be both, hard to say without context

Actually, for a prisoner talking, I'd say "hij zegt dat je hem vrij moet laten" would be more appropriate. :)
