why do the discussions I am in not show up in 'followed'?

is this which has something to do with the maintenance of yesterday?

I think you have to manually follow now.

There's a follow button in the top right of any discussion.

I like this change, actually. Makes it easier to organize the discussions you're in. But this is just an opinion.

Not easier (nor harder) than to have to click to unfollow.

However, with the new setup, if you forgot to click you'll not be alerted about it while with the old one if you forgot to click, you're alerted in several ways:

  • by each mail notification
  • by seing in your follow list(°) a discussion you don't in it (anymore).

That's why the older was better, including for organization.

(°) and seeing something (=old version) attracts far more the attention than "something missing" (=new version)..

It could possibly be the result of the maintenance. However, I have always manually followed discussions and it's new for me to hear that people can automatically follow discussions by just commenting on one. I heard it had to do with some testing, but I don't exactly know.

Hi MasterZsword ,

It could possibly be the result of the maintenance.

It definitely does. Like many other issues/changes that appeared since the maintenance.

it's new for me to hear that people can automatically follow discussions by just commenting on one.

It's like that for me since 2013.

I heard it had to do with some testing, but I don't exactly know.

If there were a testing it was testing "no automatic follow on comment" as "automatic follow on comment" is the default behaviour for years.

Really? Then, I don't know why I could never automatically follow discussions, but it's not a big deal. At least the "changes" don't affect me in any way, as pressing the follow button has been a norm for me ever since I started Duolingo years ago.
