Where best to use 'Wie'?
Hey everyone, cluney here today. I was wondering where best to use these. I'm gonna make a list of different sentences where I think they can be used and say why and I would like it if you guys would add to that list if you can think of more contexts in which to use it or tell me where I went wrong. OK 'Wie war dein Urlaub?'. 'How was your holiday?' Now I know this is correct cause I saw it in my German lessons. This question is more about how your trip was the thing you went on. Ok next 'Wie geht's?' This is obviously correct. It's how you ask how you are in German. Next 'Wie war der Frosch' 'How was the frog?' This is more asking how an object was. I don't know if this is the way you ask how an object was but it's asking generally about the frog itself. It's health activity how the frog's going. Next 'Wie war die Kirche?' 'How was the Church?'. This is my last question. This is more asking on how you liked the church it can, but not necessarily asking about the church itself. You can also ask about the weather using 'Wie war das Wetter?' I'd thank everyone on their input and help on theses situations.
Hi, cluney. I agree with you first two examples and the weather.
Wie war der Frosch? - That is not asking for the frog's health condition, as that would be "Wie geht's dem Frosch?". Your question rather implies that so. ate a frog and you ask how he liked it...:o)
In general "wie" asks for qualities, characteristics....
it's almost impossible to answer the questions without context. But I try to do my very best^^.
'Wie war der Frosch'
If you ask "wie" in context with animals it can mean "How was the taste?" (yes you can eat also frogs -.-) "Wie war das Hühnchen/Ente?" In rarely context it can refer to the behaviour. "Ich ging zu den Nachbarn, die haben einen Hund. -> Und wie war der Hund?" So the question here is how was the behaviour of the dog. God/bad.
'Wie war die Kirche?' 'Wie war das Wetter?'
These kind of questions are asking how was an event. A visit, a holyday, a concert, a meeting ect. Also how was the atmosphere. "Wie war die Stimmung" This can refer to a situation or to a person. "Wie war er denn so" means "What type of guy was he? Nice, shy, loud..."
It is mostly a general question. Often a start of a conversation. "Wie war es in der Schule? Wie war Dein Tag?" The answering person then can decide what of its experiences he/she wants to tell.
Was that helpful? Or do you need more.
best regards Angel
Thankyou very helpful.
If you ask "wie" in context with animals it can mean "How was the taste?". Should I use this if I'm at a restaurants and ask someone about the food?
lol. I hope it was written well. I was feeling very high this morning and happy so I made that up :D
Morti is right. And you will maybe get the question from your friends "Und wie war Deine Pizza?" at the end of the meal.
best regards Angel
Es hat gut geschmecht! Another question. You said
Wie war Dein Tag. So can it be used for all periods of time like 'Wie war deine Woche' 'Wie war dein Jahr?' etc?
